Outside the Huddle and Blitz are counting down who they feel are the top 50 individual players in northeast Indiana heading into the 2024 season.
Our highest preseason honor, the 6th annual First Eleven profiles the top players (in the mind of Outside the Huddle) entering the fall.
No. 9: G/DT Charlie Riddle, senior, Heritage
Like pancakes? Riddle does, evidenced by his school-record 82 pancakes a season ago as the leader of the Heritage offensive front. The 6-foot-4, 275-pound monster is an unstoppable force, particularly when he pulls from his guard spot and gets to the second level of the defense to deliver punishment.
Once engaged by Riddle, there is no getting loose. He is exceptional once he attains leverage and his constantly-moving feet mean that the longer the play goes, the more off the ball you’re going to find yourself as a defender. Sometimes, 82 times last year to be exact, a defensive player’s engagement with Riddle concludes by being put down on the ground.
At defensive tackle last fall, Riddle bottled up the middle as a key cog in Heritage’s 10-win campaign. He finished with 36 tackles, three tackles for loss and a sack.
COACH’S QUOTE ON CHARLIE RIDDLE“It’s a privilege to coach a kid like Charlie. He’s the kind of offensive lineman you’d swear was built in a lab somewhere, because he’s all of 6-foot-4, 275 pounds with heavy hands and quick hips. He plays low and nasty. However, most importantly he’s a great young man and a hard worker who sets the tone for us.”– Heritage coach Jeremy Hullinger
