No. 3 in our countdown sees the continuation of Outside the Huddle’s First Eleven, our annual preseason crowning of the top 11 players in northeast Indiana. Our highest preseason honor, this is the second-annual First 11 list.
No. 3: Jeff Becker, Carroll – Junior, QB
When Carroll coach Doug Dinan turned to a sophomore last season to run his offense, Blitz knew that the kid had to be something special.
Turned out he was.
Jeff Becker threw for over 2,000 yards and 20 touchdowns as a sophomore in the second-toughest conference in the state. That is impressive enough, but how Becker goes about dissecting defenses is even more impressive.
Quick feet and a feel for the pocket helps Becker escape pressure, while upper body strength and touch on his passes allows him to sling balls downfield on the run with relative ease.
This year, Becker will be trusted even more to make the right reads and lead the Chargers down the field for scores. That’s bad news for SAC teams that had issues corralling the QB a season ago.
COACH’S QUOTE ON JEFF BECKER
““I think one of the biggest things is he has become a bigger leader in the program. He has a fuller understanding of the offense, which was evident in the scrimmage (against Bishop Dwenger) where he made a check at the line of scrimmage – which shows a great understanding of the defense and the things we are doing.” – Carroll coach Doug Dinan
