Week 1 is in the books! Tons of quarterbacks began the season with terrific performances. As we mentioned when we began these rankings, they’ll be updated every week based on performances of the previous week. Strength of opponent, stats, clutch moments, and other intangibles will be considered every week to see who moves up and down on the list.
After the first week of the season, some new names make the list. Here is the new top 10 QB list going into Week 2.
1. Gabe Frisinger, Carroll
Nothing changes here. Frisinger was our preseason No. 1 QB after throwing for over 3,000 yards last season. Not only did Carroll make light work of a tough Hamilton Southeastern team 54-23, but Frisinger completed 25-of-34 passes for 380 yards and seven touchdowns. It was a terrific way for the senior quarterback to start the season and for the Chargers as they prepare for Center Grove in Week 2.
2. Job Richman, Eastside
Richman is a quarterback that is dangerous both through the air and on the ground. In Week 1, the South Adams Starfires couldn’t stop the Blazers’ running game, which included Richman rushing for 152 yards and a touchdown. This allowed the Blazers to defeat a slightly-favored South Adams team at home 45-27. He continues to be one of the most dynamic players in the area.
3. Jamison Roach, Adams Central
Roach almost moved up to the No. 2 slot with his solid performance in the Flying Jets’ 35-20 victory over the Bishop Luers Knights. Roach led his team with 176 total yards and added three total touchdowns (two rushing and one passing). This performance against Luers, which are coming off a run in to state in Class 3A and have moved up to 4A, is impressive for AC. The Flying Jets’ first win ever against an SAC team propels them with tons of confidence going into Week 2 as they host Richman and Eastside.
4. Lathen Janes, Huntington North
The Huntington North Vikings had a tremendous showing to start the season with a dominating 45-13 victory over Eastbrook. Running back Christain Jemison ran 19 times and compiled most of the yardage, but Janes was still efficient. He went 9-for-14 for 168 passing yards and one touchdown, The Vikings will travel in Week 2 to face Garrett on the road.
5. Eli Trent, Concordia
It feels like a new era has begun for the Concordia Cadets. They also picked up a huge 35-26 victory over Indianapolis Scecina. Quarterback Eli Trent had himself a night, compiling 350 total yards (173 passing, 178 rushing) and finished with five total touchdowns. A great start both for him and the Cadets that has the area intrigued for what is next. For now, they’ll prepare for Eastbrook in Week 2, who Huntington North just made light work of this past Friday.
6. Logan Frieden, Homestead
Frieden threw two passing touchdowns and ran for one against a Class 6A State title contender in the Westfield Shamrocks. The Spartans did lose 49-21, but they looked like a better team than a year ago. Westfield may have let off the gas pedal a bit, but Frieden still looked poised and seemed to settle in after getting down early to an extremely-talented team.
7. Zaden Baumer, South Adams
Although the Starfires fell to the Blazers in Week 1, junior quarterback Zaden Baumer looked extremely comfortable in his first start after taking over for Tytus Lehman. Baumer completed 26-of-42 passes for 316 yards and three passing touchdowns that were all to top 10 WR Wes Summersett.
8. Jaret Laughlin, Fremont
The Fremont Eagles pounded the Blackhawk Christian Braves 46-7 and were led (no surprise) by their quarterback Laughlin. He finished with 197 rushing yards and three rushing TDss to go along with 207 passing yards and one passing touchdown. A great performance that definitely keeps him in the top 10. The Eagles prepare to host Osceola Grace in Week 2.
9. Tommy Coffman, Bishop Dwenger
It took three overtimes, but the Saints found a way to beat Indianapolis Roncalli to maintain bragging rights from their state championship victory. Coffman helped lead the Saints to victory with his 170 yards passing and 56 yards rushing and, most importantly, took care of the football against top-level competition in his first game as a starter. Hitting Carter Zent for a 45-yard pass in the third quarter helped Dwenger gain some momentum as the Saints eventually get the 15-14 victory. They travel this week to face St. Francis De Sales (Ohio) in Week 2.
10 Jackson Christlieb, West Noble
The West Noble Chargers ended up on the losing side to the beginning of the Luke Amstutz era at Northridge (62-32). Their defense couldn’t find a solution to slowing down the Raiders all night, but the same could’ve been said about Christlieb. In the loss, he finished with 202 passing yards, 101 rushing yards and three total touchdowns. A terrific performance that nominated him as a potential fan vote player of the week. West Noble travels to Wawassee in Week 2 to face the Warriors.
Other QB’s on the cusp:
Axton Beste, Bluffton
Only 62 yards passing in Week 1 and 100 total yards. Looking for more in Week 2
Luke Marquardt, Leo
Had 121 passing yards and a touchdown in a 42-0 win over Wayne. A solid performance against Indianapolis Chatard instantly puts hi on the list next week.
Tre McCraney, New Haven
Went 25-44 for 284 yards, but not much else went right for the Bulldogs in their 21-2 loss to Heritage. Looking to see what he does against North Side next week.
Brandon Sanders, North Side
Missed Week 1 and may be out Week 2, although the hope for the Legends’ offense is that he is behind center. North Side has a lot to fix, and Sanders will go a long way towards helping that.
Tommy Reichert, Bishop Luers
Had a solid first three quarters against Adams Central. Completed 22-of-29 passes, but threw three late interceptions. Intangibles are there. Keeping an eye out.
