It was all roses for Bishop Dwenger for 12 minutes on Friday at Shields Field.
Then, it wasn’t.
In a battle between the two SAC favorites, no one expected a repeat of last year, a battle of field goals and a three-point Dwenger victory. The Saints proved that with a pair of touchdowns in the first quarter to take an early lead.
After that, it was all Carroll.
With adjustments on both sides of the ball, the Chargers fought back to eventually breeze past the Saints, 49-29. With the victory, Coach Doug Dinan’s team is firmly in control of the league as we near the mid-way point.
Carroll quarterback Gabe Frisinger continued to show why he’s one of the best in the state. The same could be said for the offensive line as well. With the combination of the two locked in, Frisinger finished with a half-dozen total touchdowns on Friday, four rushing and two passing, to go with 299 passing yards.
The Chargers running game started off a little rugged with a first quarter fumble that resulted in a Bishop Dwenger touchdown, but were able to get it together and eventually found the end zone five times on the ground. Running back Jackson Rhodes, who saw action at defensive back as well, finished with 85 yards rushing and helped balance things offensively for the Chargers. Junior wide receiver Owen McClure broke the game open with an 80-yard touchdown reception in the final 30 seconds of the first half that put Carroll up 28-14 and took the air out of the Bishop Dwenger defense.
Defensively, senior Linkoln Grabner led the way for Carroll (3-1) with eight total tackles and a pass deflection in the secondary. Senior linebacker Eli Neuhouser had nine tackles.
For the Saints, running back Kolyn Campbell had an impressive night on the ground, finishing with 12 rushes for 94 yards and a touchdown. Jordan Fabini added a rushing touchdown. Quarterback Tommy Coffman came out firing to start the second half and capped off a huge opening drive in the third with a passing touchdown to cut the Chargers lead to 28-21, but Carroll would answer with the 80-yard touchdown pass from Frisinger to McClure.
After that, Carroll merely added to its advantage.
The Chargers still have games against the likes of Homestead and Northrop in the “A” division, but dispatched of its biggest challenge in the league on Friday on the road.
An impressive performance all-around, particularly after falling behind early.
