Outside the Huddle and Blitz are counting down who they feel are the top 50 individual players in northeast Indiana heading into the 2023 season.
Our highest preseason honor, the 5th annual First Eleven profiles the top players (in the mind of Outside the Huddle) entering this fall.
No. 10: WR Ajani Washington, senior, New Haven
Last year at this time, we were wondering what basketballer Ajani Washington would bring to the gridiron as he suited up for Concordia Lutheran for the first time as a junior.
Turns out, he is pretty darn good on the football field as well, putting up 759 yards and nine touchdowns on 39 receptions for the Cadets. Included in that was a huge debut, scoring on all three of his receptions in the Week 1 win over South Side.
What makes Washington good on the basketball translates to the football side. He is quick on his feet and can gain separation strictly on his athleticism. He has solid hands and can take the top off of a defense or play more of a possession role in the short to intermediate pass game.
Complemented by Mylan Graham this year at New Haven, Washington should be able to feast as he faces more single coverage.
COACH’S QUOTE ON AJANI WASHINGTON“He is a gifted athlete with the ability to make a big play at any time. It’s impressive how polished he is as a receiver given his football experience. We’re excited to see his play translate from practice to Friday nights.”– New Haven coach Kyle Booher
