PREP FOOTBALL: Five Guys to Watch, Week 1

East Noble’s Alex Scott

Every Friday throughout the season, Outside the Huddle will present to you a list of five players that we think you should watch over the course of the evening’s action.

It could be someone who had a great previous week or a favorable or interesting matchup. Either way, we will pinpoint five different players that you should keep an eye on whether you are stat watching or picking a game to go to.

So, who should we watch tonight?

ALEX SCOTT, EAST NOBLE (at Wayne)

The Knights have had to pivot a bit in their receiving game this season with Mason Treesh’s injury, but during last week’s scrimmage against Concordia, Scott showed why he is likely to be the primary option. Targeted four times, Scott hauled in three catches in the scrimmage, all for touchdowns as he compiled 121 yards. Scrimmage or not, those are some crazy numbers. The Knights continue this SAC opponent swing in Week 1 at Wayne and Scott could really thrive on the offensive side of the ball after being a menace as a safety last season.

QUINTON BROCK, WARSAW (at Snider)

The Tigers lost A LOT of starters on both sides of the ball, but there has to be some comfort in bringing back Brock, who did A LOT last year himself. Sure, you may be asking “why a Warsaw quarterback, it doesn’t throw it much?” Fair point, but when Brock did throw it, there was purpose and poise to it. Of his 14 completions in 2024, six of them went for touchdowns. But, going into his third year as a starter in some capacity in the backfield, Brock has rushed for over 1,200 yards in his career and having a QB that can lead that run-focused offense with confidence is massive, especially in such a marquee game to open the season.

NOAH DOVE, EASTSIDE (at Woodlan)

Dove ran the ball 112 times last season as a freshman, so to bring him back is massive for the Blazers, who have opened their season with a win in each of the last seven seasons, including three straight over the Warriors. Just a sophomore, Dove is part of Eastside’s long-term plans, but he showed last year that he will really change the game as an underclassman. Woodlan’s defense is going to have to be sharp as Dove cuts up the field tonight.

WESTON OTT, CHURUBUSCO (vs. Bremen)

Where will we see Ott line up for the Eagles this season, starting in Week 1? It is a question as the Churubuso standout can alter things on both sides of the ball at multiple positions. His biggest key is that he is Churubusco’s returning leader in tackles for loss, so expect for him to be the guy to actively pursue Lakeland standout QB Brayden Holbrook. Ott can be a monster and had 90 total tackles last season, including 15 behind the line of scrimmage.

JAKE GONYA, GARRETT (at Adams Central)

Gonya is a name that kept popping up this offseason as a potential breakout performer in the area this season, garnering some college attention on the way. This game has interest because although Adams Central fell to Garrett last season – its only loss of the season – the Railroaders graduated a good deal of production. A player like Gonya, with his size at defensive end, could really help control a balanced and highly experienced Adams Central offense. Gonya had 28 tackles and a pair of sacks a year ago and we expect a big uptick this season.
