Longtime Bishop Dwenger boys basketball coach Matt Kostoff announced his retirement on Thursday.
Kostoff will remain a teacher at Bishop Dwenger, he said in a brief statement to area media.
Kostoff coached 25 seasons leading the Saints, his alma mater, amassing a record of 301-265. He picked up career win number 300 on February 14 with a win at Leo.
Over his career, Kostoff won five Sectional title and three Regional titles. His first Sectional title win came in the 2009-2010 season, then again in 2012. His Dwenger teams won back-to-back Regional crowns in 2014 and 2015. Kostoff’s last postseason title came recently in 2022-23 with Sectional and Regional titles. The Sectional final in 2023 was highlighted by an Aslan Nolan buzzer beater to top Concordia and the team added a Regional title win over Twin Lakes despite going 13-14 on the season.
Other that postseason championship season’s Kostoff’s top run leading Bishop Dwenger came from 2006-2009. During that three season stretch, the Saints went 52-14 and their 18 wins in the 2008-2009 season mark the highest win total during Kostoff’s 25 year tenure.
Kostoff first coached Bishop Dwenger in the 1999-2000 season after taking over the position from current Homestead head coach Chris Johnson; that Saints team went 14-10.
Half of Dwenger’s six all-time Regional titles and 5 of 10 Sectional titles for the program have come under Kostoff’s lead.
