Outside the Huddle and Blitz are counting down who they feel are the top 50 individual players in northeast Indiana heading into the 2022 season.
Our highest preseason honor, the fourth-annual First Eleven profiles the top players (in the mind of Outside the Huddle) entering this fall.
No. 6: RB Lamarion Nelson, senior, Wayne
A smooth, silky runner with equal parts speed, shiftiness and physicality, Nelson is the most complete running back in the area entering the 2022 season.
A true workhorse back, Nelson averaged 24 carries per game last season, and still averaged 5.8 yards per rush. His 1,671 yards and 13 touchdowns were further evidence that in one of the toughest conferences in the state, he can excel.
Nelson rarely goes down on first contact. Countless times last season he was able to shrug off contact, put a hand on the ground for balance and stay upright for extra yardage, or even a touchdown. His burst is impressive and his ability to make players miss in small spaces stands out as one of his greatest assets.
COACH’S QUOTE ON LAMARION NELSON
“Many backs have the height, weight and speed. A few have some very good intangibles like hands, blocking and durability. But very few have what I call the ‘IT-WOW’ factor. He has it all. The only back I’ve ever coached that had it all was Rod Smith at Harding. That is a very special club to be included in.” – Wayne coach Sherwood Haydock
