As a child, North Side standout Maalik Moore could be found huddled around a television watching the New England Patriots and dreaming one day of making plays he saw on television.
The Class of 2027 standout no longer has to dream, as he has been making play after play the last two seasons for the Legends.
“Last year, as a freshman, what stood out the most was leading the team in receiving yards and I had not developed really at all,” said Moore, who has been on a tear of late heading into Friday’s sectional showdown with top-ranked Concord. “My goals this year were to have 1,000 receiving yards, develop as one of the best safeties in the state and get top quality offers.”
Through nine games this season, Moore has reeled in 34 passes for 581 yards and nine touchdowns at receiver, all three of which lead the Legends. Defensively, he has accounted for 17 tackles and four interceptions.
In Week 8, he caught three touchdown passes and had a pair of interceptions in the win over Wayne. One week later, he hauled in six balls for 76 yards and a score against SAC champion Carroll.
Being a standout on both sides of the ball is something the sophomore takes a tremendous amount of pride in.
“Being an athlete is not easy and trying to really showcase your skill involves a lot,” Moore said. “I am always watching sports, dream about sports and I take my school work seriously. I am always working to build my stamina and body to the highest level.”
While some may be surprised with his success, Moore admits he is not, pointing to his coaches and family for their support.
“I attribute my success to playing sports throughout my entire life,” Moore said. “Many people don’t know I have played baseball since I was seven and that was, at one point, my favorite sport.
“I also attribute my success to Coach Larry Davis for always helping and guiding me. (TractionAP director) Dre Muhammad has put so much time and dedication into me and always keeps me grounded and focused. I am so thankful for Dre, as he has really helped bloom my skillset. Lastly, my parents keep me grounded and protected. They are always making sure I am straight mentally, physically and emotionally.”
Moore could also be a breakout candidate on the basketball court if he returns to the Legends this winter. But first things first, he and North have some business to attend to with the No. 1 team in the class visiting Chambers Field on Friday.
