It is time to make some adjustments to the top 10 wide receivers in northeast Indiana. Some have separated themselves from the rest as the best after the first couple of weeks, while some are right on the cusp.
The wide receiver position is probably the most loaded position we have in the area, next to the defensive line, so it is a position we’ve been keeping a close eye on. There isn’t a whole lot of change at the top of the rankings, but outside the Top 5 we’ve got some new faces.
NOTE: All of these rankings will be updated periodically during the season, with the possibility of new names joining the list and names moving up and down.
1. Maalik Moore, North Side
Still tops in the area. He started Week 1 against East Noble at quarterback due to starter Brandon Sanders bring out, where he did his best in a run-heavy game plan. His most recent game against New Haven, Moore returned to wide receiver and broke out with six receptions for 146 yards and a touchdown. He also had a pair of interceptions, but we will save the defensive back rankings for another time. Moore keeps his top spot, for now.
2. Harrison Scheele, Carroll
Quickly rising on the list and making a case for the No. 1 ranking is Harrison Sheele of Carroll. In two games against solid programs Hamilton Southeastern and Center Grove, Sheele leads the area with 345 receiving yards and five touchdowns. College interest has yet to pick up to match production, but it is only a matter of time.
3. Jayvon Irby, South Side
As an athlete who can do anything the Archers need, Irby had a huge Week 1 performance against Marion before the Archers got shut down 35-6 by South Bend St. Joseph last Friday. Despite the lopsided loss, Irby was still effective as he finished finished with 119 yards and the only touchdown for the Archers. College coaches need to jump on this unsigned talent. He’s got 194 receiving yards and a pair of touchdown receptions so far. He’s also added 97 rushing yards and two rushing scores, so he’s been doing it all for South Side.
4. Wes Summersett, South Adams
One thing is for certain, South Adams will always put up numbers on offense as long as Coach Grant Moser is at the helm. Summersett leads the team with four receiving touchdowns in two games against Eastside and Bellmont. He continues to be one of the top receivers we have in the area.
5. Maddox Weil, Northrop
Weil didn’t play Week 1 at Northrop, so he drops a few spots as he nurses an injury. But the star junior can’t drop out of the Top 5. He still managed to pick up a new offer from Kansas State this week. The hope is he returns this week against North Side and will be box office TV for the Bruins.
6. Mike Henley Jr., Concordia
Cracking the list for the first time, Henley Jr. has been dynamic for the Cadets. He has five touchdowns and 196 yards in two games and has quickly become one of the top guys at his position in the area. He just picked up a college game-day invite from Miami (OH) and visited Eastern Michigan for its home opener last Saturday. He’s making waves to start the season.
7. Keaton Robinson, Snider
Being able to be front and center to watch Keaton Robinson against East Noble was exhilarating. He is every bit as good as advertised, if not better. Going for 145 yards and a touchdown against a stingy defense like East Noble’s is impressive. He’s just getting started.
8. Alex Scott, East Noble
It’s only been two games, so don’t want to overreact too much to the lack of production on offense. Scott hasn’t had to do too much on offense in the Knights’ first two wins and he has been huge on defense. In the recent game against Snider, Scott showed why he still belongs on this list, as he made clutch catches when the team needed them most, including a 30-yard touchdown catch to help stretch the lead in the first half. He remains a problem for opposing defensive backs on Friday nights.
9. Tayshaun McQueen, Huntington North
The Vikings offense has exceeded expectations through the first two weeks. Both the running game and passing attack has been unstoppable with Top 10 QB Lathen Janes and Top 10 RB Christian Jemison. Let’s add a Top 10 receiver with McQueen, who has 217 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns. The junior wideout is quickly becoming one of Janes’ favorite targets to start the season.
10. Jax Wanner, South Adams
For an offense that is putting up video game numbers through the first two weeks, Wanner is second in the area in receiving yards (behind Scheele) with 311 yards and three touchdowns for the Starfires. The senior has been a top target so far for QB Zaden Baumer and already has 21 receptions on the season, solid and consistent numbers to sneak his way into the top 10.
