PREP FOOTBALL: Blitz’s Picks, Week 5

With a few solid weeks of picks, Blitz believes he is finally someone you can trust when it comes to who is going to win each week.

But Week 5 will be a challenge, with big games in at least three area conferences that could go either way.

Time to deliver. After all, that’s why you’re here, right?

Last week: 17-4 (.809)

Overall: 76-20 (.791)

BISHOP DWENGER AT HOMESTEAD. The Saints have had the edge recently in this series, winning the last two by a combined five points. If Bishop Dwenger is going to have a chance to make it three straight over Sparty, it has to contain quarterback Michael White, who is averaging over 200 total yards per game. BLITZ SAYS HOMESTEAD BY 8.

BISHOP LUERS AT CONCORDIA LUTHERAN. Sandwiched in between big games against Wayne and North Side, Bishop Luers enter a potential trap matchup with Concordia. The Cadets are good enough to put a scare into the Knights if they aren’t careful. A younger team starting to find its groove, Luers must avoid a letdown. BLITZ SAYS BISHOP LUERS BY 15.

NORTH SIDE AT NORTHROP. It’s so tough to pick Northrop games without knowing the health status of David Callison. A healthy Callison gives the Bruins a shot in this one, a game that will have plenty of athleticism on the field. North Side feels like a team still trying to find itself, although Tristen Newsome has been a joy to watch behind center. Not sure why, but this one feels different. BLITZ SAYS NORTHROP BY 3 (contingent on Callison unhindered by injury)

SNIDER AT CARROLL. The big one this week, and perhaps the season, in the SAC. Snider’s defense is the best in the area, while Jimmy Sullivan is the best quarterback around. Can the Chargers’ receivers find space to cook against a secondary led by a guy in Brandon Logan who had a pair of pick-6s against Sullivan last year? Blitz would love nothing more than to see Carroll fully unleash Sullivan and see how Snider tries to contain both his arm and his legs. BLITZ SAYS CARROLL BY 1.

SOUTH SIDE AT WAYNE. The Generals have been proven to be one-dimensional, largely relying on its run game to move the ball, as the team is averaging just over four completions per game. Positive is, the rushing options are laden with seniors, including wideout Harold Mack, who could have a big game. BLITZ SAYS WAYNE BY 22.

BELLMONT AT HUNTINGTON NORTH. Don’t worry Vikings fans, a return home to play the Braves will help offset the feelings from the two-straight losses after starting 2-0. BLITZ SAYS HUNTINGTON NORTH BY 40.

COLUMBIA CITY AT DEKALB. A week ago, Blitz would have looked at this matchup as very intriguing. But after DeKalb was blanked by East Noble last week, some of the luster has faded. This will be, however, the best team that the Eagles will have played so far this year. The run D of Columbia City will be the difference. BLITZ SAYS COLUMBIA CITY BY 14.

EAST NOBLE AT LEO. One of the best rivalries in the area. The fact that these two have met in the playoffs in each of the past five years adds to the drama. This one may very well be for the NE8 championship. East Noble’s defense was stout last week against DeKalb, but Leo is a different challenge. Blitz has been picking this game for many years, and has a bit of a tradition going. So, if you know, you know. BLITZ SAYS EAST NOBLE BY 1.

NEW HAVEN AT NORWELL. Winless New Haven deserves a victory. Not saying that Norwell doesn’t but, hey, it won last week. BLITZ SAYS NEW HAVEN BY 5.

ADAMS CENTRAL AT HERITAGE. It seems each year around this time we identify a team that may have a chance to end Adams Central’s multi-year reign of terror in the ACAC. And each time, the Flying Jets lay down an absolute drubbing to shut us up for another year. BLITZ SAYS ADAMS CENTRAL BY 15.

BLACKHAWK CHRISTIAN AT SOUTH ADAMS. One of the most prolific QB-WR connections in the area this season is South Adams’ Tytus Lehman and Derek McKean. The pair of juniors have connected for 29 receptions, 376 yards and four TDs. The duo could feast on Friday. BLITZ SAYS SOUTH ADAMS BY 31.

JAY COUNTY AT BLUFFTON. How about some love for Griffin Morgan? The junior leads the Tigers in tackles with 33 and tackles for loss with 10.5. When Jay County can run the ball consistently, it has a shot to win. Unfortunately for the Pats, Blitz just doesn’t see many running lanes opening up Friday on the road. BLITZ SAYS BLUFFTON BY 21.

SOUTHERN WELLS AT WOODLAN. The Warriors may be 1-3, but they have a stretch of winnable games kicking off this week with Southern Wells. BLITZ SAYS WOODLAN BY 33.

ANGOLA AT LAKELAND. Blitz was really impressed with the Lakeland offense in the second half of last week’s game at Garrett. This is a team that can still end up being really good. The slow start against the Railroaders doomed em. That won’t happen this week. BLITZ SAYS LAKELAND BY 20.

EASTSIDE AT GARRETT. Letdown game? Eastside is coming off a shocking loss to Churubusco, while Garrett is riding high after the Lakeland win. Coach Chris DePew will have his team locked in as it attempts to regain control of the DeKalb County trophy. BLITZ SAYS GARRETT BY 16.

FAIRFIELD AT WEST NOBLE. Let’s play a game. How many touchdowns will Seth Pruitt score this week? He has 14 through four weeks. BLITZ SAYS WEST NOBLE BY 22. (Pruitt 3 TDs).

FREMONT AT CENTRAL NOBLE. Fremont’s win over Park Tudor last week was great to see, as well as Carmyne Moreno’s career game going for over 400 yards rushing. The Eagles haven’t beaten Central Noble since 2019. BLITZ SAYS FREMONT BY 6.

PRAIRIE HEIGHTS AT CHURUBUSCO. All of a sudden, this game has some big-time ramifications in the NECC Small Division. Was ‘Busco a one-week wonder in its win over Eastside last week? Can Mac Armstrong continue to pile up passing yards and rushing touchdowns for Heights? A battle between division undefeated in Turtle Town. What could be better? BLITZ SAYS PRAIRIE HEIGHTS BY 2.

WARSAW AT CONCORD. The two lone undefeated teams left in Northern Lakes Conference play and a pair of state-ranked 5A teams that, oh yeah, reside in the same sectional. Coach Craig Koehler may have his best team ever in 10 years at the helm of the Minutemen. Warsaw loves to run the ball, and Concord is led by Purdue commit Jaron Thomas, who is averaging seven yards per rush. What gives? BLITZ SAYS CONCORD BY 2.
