A new feature at Outside the Huddle, we will connect with area coaches on occasion to get their takes on big wins, huge matchups upcoming and more.
This week, we tracked down Pat McCrea of Prairie Heights, whose team is off to a 2-0 start for just the second time in 38 years.
Q: Through two games, what has been the biggest difference between last season and this season?
A: I think the biggest difference for us this year is our numbers. When you have numbers like we have this year, it forces competition within the team for a starting spot and playing time. That has pushed our guys in positive ways to make them all better. If you want a spot, you have to fight for it.
Q: How did those added numbers come about and how beneficial has that been?
A: I think that it comes down to the kids on the team and the leadership of the guys returning. They were out there recruiting guys to play. As stated earlier, it has benefited us with competition within the team, but also it gives us flexibility to rest guys during the game. Instead of only playing with 13 guys on the field on Friday night, we are well beyond that now.
Q: How has Mac Armstrong shown improvement at QB1 after starting as a sophomore?
A: Mac has done a better job at being patient in the pocket on passing downs and his decision making has been better.
Q: You have a lot of veterans on both sides of the ball playing some key positions. How have they helped?
A: It definitely has made an impact! Our seniors who have been with us are leaders, and they are a big help with the younger guys! They want to see the young kids do well and they go out of their way to help them. Overall, I’d say the guys supporting each other and cheering for each other helps keep morale high!
Q: What can winning even a few games do for a program in terms of growth and confidence?
A: You are able to build momentum with that! The guys are excited and they want more!
Q: You have Lakeland this week, followed by divisional play. What needs to happen to continue the mojo?
A: This is obviously a big test for us this week! Lakeland is a really good football team! We have to compete with them every play if we want to come out with a win! This game will be a great test to see where we are at! Our defense will have to continue to make big stops and our offense has to sustain drives to keep it going!
