As always, we kick off our Friday mornings with five players to watch. Who is important in Week 12? Who’s a matchup problem? Did they shine in Week 11?
It is win or go home time in Indiana high school football yet again but even better, we are crowning champions tonight in some keys games and key rematches.
Here are the five guys you should keep an extra eye on tonight.
WES SUMMERSETT, SOUTH ADAMS (vs. Hagerstown)
Summersett is coming off a special week on the field and is a mighty force for opposing pass defenses. Leading the Starfires, he has now hit a major milestone with 1,203 receiving yards – an average of 109.4 yards per game. That stretch makes him a big target and big yardage threat every week. He has also added 7 rushing touchdowns this season on just 20 carries, bringing him to 20 touchdowns on the season in total as he leads all South Adams players with 123 total points scored. Catch him on the other side of the ball too where he is third on the team in tackles, has three forced fumbles and last week returned an interception 82 yards for a score.
JARET LAUGHLIN, FREMONT (vs. North Miami)
Fremont is sitting at 8 wins for the first time since 2001 and on the verge of their first Sectional title while averaging over 35 points per contest. Laughlin, a junior, has been an offensive menace throughout the season both on the ground and through the air. As a quarterback, he has thrown for over 650 yards on a 55 percent completion rating. He also leads Fremont on the ground, going over 1,000 yards for the season last Friday night while also accounting for nearly half of the Eagles’ total offensive touchdowns.
TY SEBERT, EASTSIDE (at Adams Central)
Sebert’s 82 total tackles and 49 solo tackles lead this Eastside team into a rematch with Adams Central after losing 32-21 to the Flying Jets in week two of the season. Both teams are expected to be very different than they were 10 weeks ago, but Sebert’s hard hitting defense shouldn’t be. He had 10 tackles against AC the first time around and will be a big part in trying to slow their run game this time. Sebert also shares the team lead with a pair of interceptions on the season.
TYLER RUPLE, ANGOLA (vs. Garrett)
The biggest part of a defense that has helped persuade teams to not throw the ball against Angola, Ruple leads the Hornets with five interceptions on the season, also adding 8 pass deflections, a forced fumble and fumble recovery on the year. Long and quick at his position, Ruple has been a force to help the Hornets in back to back big wins; he had two picks to open Sectional play two weeks ago against Tippecanoe Valley. He also has 55 tackles on the season with a team fourth best 43 solo efforts.
AYDEN LEY, EAST NOBLE (at Bishop Dwenger)
The East Noble defense has been stout and in a lot of ways, has relied on guys who also do big things on the offensive side of the ball. The senior Ley has been a constant for the Knights on defense though, posting 80 tackles on the season and a team fourth best 10.5 tackles of loss. Ley has gotten after the opposing quarterback plenty with 3.5 sacks and seven hurries. Ley has had six or more tackles in 10 of East Noble’s 11 games this season.
