We are into the part of the year where you hear a lot of this:
Team A is better than Team B because Team C beat Team B by X so Team A is better.
You know what’s great about football? You never know what’s going to happen when teams meet on the field. That’s especially true at the high school level, where the imperfections and limitations of teenagers show through.
We settle everything on the field. Or in Blitz’s Picks. Both are equally telling.
Let’s get to it.
Last week: 15-5 (.750)
Overall: 88-28 (.758)
BISHOP DWENGER AT NORTHROP. No one has held the Bruins to less than 25 points in a game this season. The Saints have allowed just two touchdowns all year – none to teams in Indiana. So what gives at Spuller Stadium on Friday? There is no doubt that this is the toughest defense Northrop has played yet. So can the Bruins execute and limit mistakes? The magic number is 21. If the Bruins get to 21 points, three touchdowns, they win. Can they? BLITZ SAYS BISHOP DWENGER BY 3.
BISHOP LUERS AT CONCORDIA. The Cadets are allowing 47 points per game, admittedly against some pretty good offenses through the first five weeks. But the Knights are starting to find themselves, particularly that running game. BLITZ SAYS BISHOP LUERS BY 28.
SNIDER AT HOMESTEAD. A season ago, the Spartans got blown off the field by the Panthers in a 35-0 shutout. You can bet that still stings out in Aboite. Snider is vulnerable and Coach Chad Zolman’s team has even more incentive after struggling to move the ball last week at Bishop Dwenger. BLITZ SAYS HOMESTEAD BY 7.
SOUTH SIDE AT CARROLL. Way back in 2007, South Side went to Huntertown in mid-October and took down the Chargers in convincing fashion 24-7 to open sectional play. Since then, the teams have played 10 times, with Carroll winning all 10 with the closest game decided by 21 points. More of the same on Friday. BLITZ SAYS CARROLL BY 36.
WAYNE AT NORTH SIDE. In 11 games at Warren Central last year, Jaydin Rivers threw six touchdowns and nine INTs. Entering Friday, the senior North Side QB has thrown 18 touchdowns and zero picks. His completion percentage has also jumped by nearly 20 points. Quite the turnaround. BLITZ SAYS NORTH SIDE BY 39.
BELLMONT AT LEO. The Lions have a tough ending to the regular season, with Huntington North, Columbia City and DeKalb coming up. But first, they cannot take Bellmont lightly. The Braves have notched double-digit point totals in two-straight games for the first time in two years. BLITZ SAYS LEO BY 37.
COLUMBIA CITY AT NEW HAVEN. All of a sudden…this is a game to watch. The Eagles have looked out of sorts of late, particularly last week when they took their worst home loss in two years. If New Haven can slow the run and limit turnovers, it can absolutely win this game. Blitz picked ’em last week for the dub and it came to fruition. That makes Blitz the Bulldogs’ good luck charm. BLITZ SAYS NEW HAVEN BY TWO.
DEKALB AT HUNTINGTON NORTH. The Barons want some respect, and they feel they have earned it in recent weeks with a close loss to East Noble followed by a pounding of Columbia City. The Lathen Lanes to James Linker combination has been deadly for the Vikings this season. Does DeKalb have an answer? Ask and you shall receive, coach. BLITZ SAYS HUNTINGTON NORTH BY 1.
EAST NOBLE AT NORWELL. The last time the Knights swept through the regular season undefeated was 2019, the year they went to state before falling to Evansville Memorial. Another step in that quest – both the undefeated NE8 season and the state return – on Friday. BLITZ SAYS EAST NOBLE BY 38.
JAY COUNTY AT WOODLAN. Both of these teams have lost to Southern Wells. Who had that on their bingo card at the start of the season? BLITZ SAYS WOODLAN BY 9.
SOUTH ADAMS AT ADAMS CENTRAL. Sept. 25, 2020 was the last loss to an ACAC team for the Flying Jets. Five years and a day. The team that beat AC that night? South Adams. To be the best, you gotta beat the best. It doesn’t happen in Monroe on Friday. BLITZ SAYS ADAMS CENTRAL BY 8.
SOUTHERN WELLS AT BLUFFTON. All of a sudden, Blitz isn’t skimming over the Raiders. Neither should the Tigers, despite the struggles for Southern Wells in matching up with the top-scoring offense in the entire conference. This is the best team the Raiders will have faced all year up to this point. BLITZ SAYS BLUFFTON BY 33.
TIPTON AT HERITAGE. The Patriots had a chance late to be “that team” to beat Adams Central, but let it slip away. No such late-game dramatics this Friday. BLITZ SAYS HERITAGE BY 23.
ANGOLA AT FAIRFIELD. Getting defensive stops at crucial times, or lack thereof, have really hurt the Hornets the last few weeks. Fairfield is no slouch and is averaging over 250 yards per game on the ground. Can Angola rise to the challenge? BLITZ SAYS FAIRFIELD BY 2.
CENTRAL NOBLE AT LAKELAND. The Lakers have three-straight wins against the Cougars. Let’s make it four. BLITZ SAYS LAKELAND BY 30.
EASTSIDE AT PRAIRIE HEIGHTS. Eastside quarterback Job Richman is averaging 263 total yards per game. That average could go up on the road at Heights. BLITZ SAYS EASTSIDE BY 25.
FREMONT AT CHURUBUSCO. Free pork burgers for all fans if the Eagles win this game! OK, not really. Well, maybe now that Blitz put it out there, it will be a thing? Only one way to find out. BLITZ SAYS CHURUBUSCO BY 13.
WEST NOBLE AT GARRETT. Can anyone figure out the Railroaders? Play Adams Central tough and beat Busco and Lakeland. But also have lost big to DeKalb and Eastside. West Noble’s offense is every bit as effective as Eastside’s. BLITZ SAYS WEST NOBLE BY 5.
BLACKHAWK CHRISTIAN AT TOLEDO CHRISTIAN (OH). Unfamiliar school alert! Toledo Christian is 2-3 on the year and is the Eagles. That is all Blitz was willing to find out. Blackhawk Christian has yet to win a true road game in program history. Is it time? BLITZ SAYS TOLEDO CHRISTIAN BY 3.
WARSAW AT PLYMOUTH. What was that last week? Lack of defense and turnovers led to the Tigers losing to Concord by 31, the biggest Northern Lakes Conference loss for Warsaw since 2017. That defeat eight years ago? To Plymouth. Weird how things work out. BLITZ SAYS WARSAW BY 14.
