Has everyone here seen The Wire?
Bit of a funny question at the start, right? Well, Blitz had a lot of time to fill during hibernation. Between eating and sleeping, there wasn’t much else to do but do some streaming.
One of Blitz’s favorites he goes back to is The Wire. In one scene, a certain character, well, we will call him a businessman, Mr. Stringer Bell has a word he wants spread to his associates.
“I want you to put the word out there that we back up.”
For those who have been around these parts before, you already know what time it is. For the newbies, welcome.
Now, let’s get to it.
2023 overall record: 200-47 (.809 winning percentage)
2024 overall record: 204-49 (.806 winning percentage)
CARROLL AT HAMILTON SOUTHEASTERN. The Chargers have been competitive against HSE the last two years in Week 1. Coach Doug Dinan’s team has gotten exactly what it has wanted out of the experience, other than a dub, of course. This one will go similar. Carroll has some pieces and is the team to beat to start the season in the SAC. But HSE on the road with a new starting quarterback? Not sure the Chargers can score enough to steal this one. BLITZ SAYS HSE BY 12.
EAST NOBLE AT WAYNE. The debut for Coach Darrion White at Wayne, who has been hard at work all off-season putting together a coaching staff and a roster. This is a tough task right out of the gate. East Noble has lost a lot from last year’s 13-win team, but still has the firepower led by QB Rylee Biddle. The last time these two teams met was in the playoffs in 2000, a 35-7 East Noble victory. That sounds right. BLITZ SAYS EAST NOBLE BY 28.
CONCORDIA VS. SCECINA AT BEECH GROVE. The Cadets are 2-19 in their last 21 games, including 2-8 last year. However, one of those wins came against Scecina at Zollner Stadium in Week 1. This is a tougher task, with Coach Dan Harris now in Year 2 at Scecina and ready to take some steps forward. If the Cadets can play some serious defense and force some turnovers, it has a chance to keep this one close. BLITZ SAYS SCECINA BY 13.
BISHOP DWENGER AT RONCALLI. Blitz has been waiting for months to see this Saints team on the field in anger. They impressed wherever they went over the summer, and there is a positivity surrounding the program that has been missing for a few years. Roncalli has had a couple of middling seasons, but is looking at 2025 as a return to form. This one could go either way. But there is something about these Saints…BLITZ SAYS BISHOP DWENGER BY 4.
BISHOP LUERS AT LEO. This was a fun one last year at Luersfield as the Lions escaped with a three-point victory. We know what Leo is going to do – attempt to establish Nathan Foster by getting him the ball in any way possible. The question here is, who gets the better of the other, Leo’s tough offensive line or the stupid-good abilities of the Bishop Luers defensive front? BLITZ SAYS LEO BY 2.
NORTHROP AT NEW HAVEN. Remember this one last year? Northrop scored last in a 53-48 melee to capture the season opener. Blitz sees more of the same this time around. First to 60 wins! BLITZ SAYS NORTHROP BY 7.
SOUTH SIDE AT MARION. The Archers should have won this one last year, letting it slip away in overtime. Now at home with strides being made annually with Coach Andre Goodwell, South Side is aiming to be 1-0 for the first time in 20 years. BLITZ SAYS SOUTH SIDE BY 4.
HOMESTEAD AT WESTFIELD. Outside of South Adams, no one has a bigger challenge to start the season than the Spartans, who will head down to Indy to take on Westfield, a team some believe is the best team in the state regardless of class. Survive, avoid injuries and get back to Fort Wayne in one piece. BLITZ SAYS WESTFIELD BY 22.
NORTHRIDGE AT NORTH SIDE. Ready for the debut of Jaydin Rivers behind center at North Side? We could see some things Friday out of this offense that is truly going to excite some people about the Legends. The first of many games to start the season where North Side will be favored. BLITZ SAYS NORTH SIDE BY 10.
WARSAW AT SNIDER. The biggest game in the city this Friday. Warsaw beat Carroll in the playoffs two years ago, but it still feels like the Tigers don’t get much respect around here. After a run to state, Warsaw is looking to show it can take on, and beat, the best the city limits of Fort Wayne has to offer. Expect a lot of the running game in this one, with both teams adept at the rushing attack. Warsaw is here to prove a point. BLITZ SAYS WARSAW BY 3.
ANGOLA AT DEKALB. These two squads have been playing in Week 1 every year since 2014. Angola has had issues in containing DeKalb’s playmakers in the last few years. Feel as if that trend will continue. New DeKalb coach Ryan Robertson gets his first win in his first game. BLITZ SAYS DEKALB BY 8.
COLUMBIA CITY AT NORTHWOOD. This is a good game to start the season for Columbia City. NorthWood is a sound program and will give the Eagles an immediate idea of what they are good at and what still needs work. Both teams are going to want to establish the run. The nod goes to NorthWood, who have some dogs at linebacker and wide receiver. BLITZ SAYS NORTHWOOD BY 6.
EASTBROOK AT HUNTINGTON NORTH. Last year caught our eye when the Vikings beat Eastbrook in Week 1 on the road. Can they do it again at home? Eastbrook is much improved, while Huntington North has a lot to prove. Offensive line play will be the difference here. BLITZ SAYS HUNTINGTON NORTH BY 2.
HERITAGE AT BELLMONT. Bellmont’s non-conference schedule – Heritage and South Adams – does it zero favors before entering NE8 play. Heritage is breaking in a new quarterback and replacing some key defensive stalwarts. Blitz desperately wants to see Bellmont win a game this year. Let’s make it happen. But not this week. BLITZ SAYS HERITAGE BY 27.
MISSISSINEWA AT NORWELL. The recent success of Ole Miss will need to continue under new coach Jeremy Lochner after Kyle Buresh took the job at Muncie Central. The Indians have lost just two in the last two seasons, once to Bishop Luers and once to Leo. Against Norwell? They are 2-0. BLITZ SAYS MISSISSINEWA BY 14.
BLUFFTON AT SHENANDOAH. These two last played in the playoffs way back in 1994. Pretty sure Bluffton coach Brent Kunkel had solid facial hair even way back when. Look, there’s too much offensive firepower here for the Raiders to handle. BLITZ SAYS BLUFFTON BY 20.
BLACKFORD AT JAY COUNTY. New Blackford coach Steve Boozier returns to Jay County, where he coached from 2010-12. It’s true! Go ahead and look it up. The Patriots have beaten Blackford four straight times to open the season. BLITZ SAYS JAY COUNTY BY 28.
EASTSIDE AT WOODLAN. An underrated Week 1 showdown. Woodlan may be ready to make a move after winning five games in Coach Brock Rohrbacher’s first season. Eastside is looking to regain its form as well. The Warriors last beat Eastside in 2017. Hmmm…BLITZ SAYS WOODLAN BY 3.
GARRETT AT ADAMS CENTRAL. This one opened our eyes last year when the Railroaders knocked off the Flying Jets in convincing fashion. All the Flying Jets did after that was win 14 straight, including a 2A state title. A new year, but the win streak continues. BLITZ SAYS ADAMS CENTRAL BY 14.
SOUTH ADAMS AT MARION LOCAL (OH). My my my. When you have a team drop you last minute, there are limited options in terms of opponents. The Starfires ended up with Marion Local, winners of four-straight Ohio state championships and a current winning streak of 64 games, a state record. But Marion Local does compete in the smallest division in Ohio (the state might wanna look into Success Factor), much like the Starfires. Can’t accuse South Adams of ducking anyone…BLITZ SAYS MARION LOCAL BY 31.
SOUTHERN WELLS AT ELWOOD. Is this a chance for Coach Blake Blaker’s team to end its 19-game losing streak? Elwood has won just one of its last 15 games. Problem is, that one game was a 47-6 win over Southern Wells to open last season. BLITZ SAYS ELWOOD BY 21.
BREMEN AT CHURUBUSCO. This one should be good in Turtle Town. The edge goes to the Eagles, who are due to start 1-0 after losing to Columbia City in each of the last five season openers. BLITZ SAYS CHURUBUSCO BY 8.
BLACKHAWK CHRISTIAN AT FREMONT. Carmyne Moreno begins his quest seeking 2,000 rushing yards. Yes, it’s daunting, but that’s what makes goals so fun. Even the ones set by Blitz. BLITZ SAYS FREMONT BY 30.
GOSHEN AT FAIRFIELD. Falcons by a bunch. BLITZ SAYS FAIRFIELD BY 26.
LAKELAND AT SOUTH BEND ST. JOSEPH. This is a very intriguing matchup, as Lakeland has a chance to have its best season in quite some time. A road win at a competent foe would really set the tone for the Lakers. BLITZ SAYS LAKELAND BY 4.
WEST NOBLE AT CENTRAL NOBLE. Rivalry games in Week 1 are fun because you have zero clue on what to expect. But in this one, we kind of do. West Noble is Blitz’s favorite in the NECC Big Division, while Central Noble has lost the last three in this matchup by an average of 38 points. BLITZ SAYS WEST NOBLE BY 38.
WHITKO AT PRAIRIE HEIGHTS. The Thomas Tyree era begins at Whitko. The Panthers have owned this series of late, winning three of the last four, including last year’s 56-14 rout. BLITZ SAYS PRAIRIE HEIGHTS BY 23.
