Each season, the culmination of the Outside the Huddle Top 50 player countdown is the naming of our annual First Five, the highest preseason honor for OTH basketball coverage.
The First Five traces its lineage back to The News-Sentinel’s years of presenting “Fabulous Five” teams of the area’s best five players in both boys and girls basketball. This player is part of our seventh season of naming First Five players.

No. 3 – Brooke Winchester, Warsaw
Winchester has been a dominant force in the paint, serving as a key player on Warsaw’s talented, top-tier roster. Though she was the team’s third-leading scorer last season, she consistently delivered, never scoring in single digits and hitting a season-high 22 points in the season-ending loss to Northridge. Winchester averaged 15.4 points per game but truly shined with her rebounding, pulling down 9.5 boards per game and recording 10 double-doubles, including an impressive 19 rebounds in that same Northridge loss. Adding 2.3 assists per game, she was a well-rounded contributor, anchoring Warsaw on both ends of the floor with her interior dominance.
COACH’S QUOTE ON WINCHESTER
“I am so proud of Brooke and how hard she works. She continues to improve and get better every year. This is a kid who almost averaged a double-double last year (15.4 ppg, 9.5 rpg) who had a monster game in sectional vs. Northridge. As good as she was last year, she is playing even better this year. She had a great summer, including being part of the Junior All-Star team and she is playing with a lot of confidence. She is a match up issue for many teams as she is capable of hitting the outside shot, driving to the rim or playing with her back to the basket. I am excited to watch her play this year, especially when you combine her improvements along with her improved teammates. Brooke is our most vocal player and a great leader.” – Warsaw coach Lenny Krebs
