
Being an assistant coach is a difficult task. The pay is not fantastic, the hours are grueling and there are a lot of long, hot summer days out on the practice field.
Throughout this season, I’m going to spotlight some of the great assistant coaches we have in our area and share their stories of why they do what they do. Today’s coach truly exemplifies the hard work and dedication it takes to be an assistant coach.
Bill Skelton, currently in his 14th year as the varsity assistant coach at Homestead High School, brings a wealth of experience and a deep passion for football to the program. His coaching journey spans several schools and over two decades, with each stop contributing to his growth as a mentor and leader in the sport.
Coaching Journey
Bill Skelton began his coaching career as a varsity assistant at New Haven High School, where he spent four formative years from 2004 to 2008. Following this, he took on the role of head coach at Peru High School from 2008 to 2011 before joining Homestead in 2011 as a varsity assistant
Coaching Philosophy and Impact
Skelton’s coaching philosophy centers around the holistic development of his players, emphasizing not only their athletic skills but also their growth as individuals. He values dedication, perseverance and teamwork, qualities he believes are essential for success both on and off the field. His favorite memories in coaching reflect the deep connections and friendships forged with players and fellow coaches alike, highlighting the sense of community and camaraderie that football fosters.
For Skelton, coaching goes beyond the game itself. It’s about guiding young athletes through their high school years, helping them build confidence and resilience that will serve them in their future endeavors. He finds immense satisfaction in witnessing his players evolve over their high school careers, seeing them succeed not just in football, but in life beyond the field.
