So many snap judgements on teams after the initial Friday to start the season, several of which you can read about here.
As for Blitz, he was OK, but not spectacular. You don’t read this column for OK. You read it to brag to your friends and family that Blitz, like you, are a dynamic prognosticator.
Shaking off the rust can be hard. Time to get serious in Week 2.
Last week: 21-7 (.750)
CARROLL AT CENTER GROVE. This is what Coach Doug Dinan wants for his Chargers, back-to-back games against powerful 6A foes. Carroll beat Warren Central in Week 2 a year ago. Might we see it again? The Chargers need to protect the football to have a shot. BLITZ SAYS CENTER GROVE BY 16.
CINCINNATI MOELLER (OH) AT BISHOP DWENGER. Remember the days of Bishop Dwenger scheduling LaSalle out of Cincinnati? Yeah, that would be a better matchup than facing off against the second-ranked team in the entire state of Ohio and a perennial national power. BLITZ SAYS MOELLER BY 53.
EAST NOBLE AT SNIDER. Quick, who scored the most points against the Panthers last season? It was East Noble, which scored 28 in a 45-28 loss. Feel safe in saying Snider isn’t scoring 45 this time around. But also confident that East Noble isn’t dropping 28. BLITZ SAYS SNIDER BY 18.
CONCORDIA LUTHERAN AT EASTBROOK. Both had surprising outcomes last week, with the Cadets beating Scecina and Eastbrook getting skunked at home by Huntington North. The last time Concordia began a season 2-0? 1978. That’s right, 46 years ago. BLITZ SAYS EASTBROOK BY 9.
BISHOP LUERS AT NEW HAVEN. The Knights got stomped 36-7 in this matchup a year ago, and while they lost plenty of production to graduation, New Haven lost more. Bishop Luers’ defense played pretty well against Leo last week outside of allowing a few big plays. It will be too much for the Bulldogs. BLITZ SAYS BISHOP LUERS BY 22.
NORTHROP AT HUNTINGTON NORTH. The game Blitz will be at on Friday. Seriously, a chance to see a pair 1-0 squads that he typically doesn’t see. Will Northrop continue to put up big points? Can Huntington North hang with a different kind of offense from Eastbrook’s pack-it-in style? One of these two is emerging 2-0, which will be pretty cool. BLITZ SAYS NORTHROP BY 13.
SOUTH SIDE AT ST. JOSEPH. Who else really wanted to see the Archers get that dub last week against Marion? Let’s see it this week. BLITZ SAYS SOUTH SIDE BY 4.
LAWRENCE NORTH AT NORTH SIDE. Blitz remembers going to games at Chambers Field where there were houses right up against the visiting side, only one set of grandstands that both teams’ fans had to share and ripped up grass by Week 4. Now, Chambers Field will showcase turf for the first time. Can North Side feed off the hype and knock off the 10th-ranked team in Class 6A? BLITZ SAYS NORTH SIDE BY 2.
NOBLESVILLE AT HOMESTEAD. The Spartans were only able to gain 1.6 yards per rush last week against Carmel. A key to a Week 2 win will be finding a way to take some of the pressure off of quarterback Michael White. This is a game Homestead can win if it limits mistakes. BLITZ SAYS HOMESTEAD BY 3.
SOUTH BEND RILEY AT WAYNE. Did you know that Wayne hasn’t lost a regular-season non-conference game since 2012? A lot of those years didn’t have a single non-conference matchup but still, that’s seven straight dubs. BLITZ SAYS WAYNE BY 7.
COLUMBIA CITY AT PLYMOUTH. Coach Adam Handley has done a good job getting Plymouth pointed in the right direction again. Dropping 53 points on a decent Twin Lakes team last week is no joke. This may be an offensive shootout depending on the defenses. BLITZ SAYS COLUMBIA CITY BY 13.
DELTA AT NORWELL. Wow, Blitz sure whiffed on taking Norwell to beat Mississinewa last week. All the Indians did is win 35-0. Can Norwell find some offense against another challenging opponent? BLITZ SAYS DELTA BY 18.
GARRETT AT DEKALB. This one should be fun. Garrett was the darling of Week 1 in the area. DeKalb wants to prove it can be a factor in the NE8. Just some blue-collar football on a Friday in northeast Indiana. Sign Blitz up. BLITZ SAYS DEKALB BY 2.
LEO AT ANGOLA. There’s some young talent up in Angola. Here’s hoping it steps up soon as junior Hawk Hasselman (admittedly a preseason Top 50 snub) is a do-it-all athlete from the Hornets. This feels like another game where Brock Schott goes nuts along the defensive front. BLITZ SAYS LEO BY 21.
SOUTH ADAMS AT BELLMONT. The Starfires only rushed for 13 yards on 23 attempts last week against Tipton. That average is…not good. It will be better against the Braves. BLITZ SAYS SOUTH ADAMS BY 29.
BLUFFTON AT MANCHESTER. Not a bad start for sophomore Axton Beste last week, completed 81 percent of his passes and three touchdowns. Here’s seeing if he can take the show on the road. BLITZ SAYS BLUFFTON BY 27.
EASTSIDE AT ADAMS CENTRAL. Ah, to be hidden amongst the corn adjacent to the Landing Strip in Monroe this week. Adams Central coaching staff has surely challenged the Flying Jets to fix what went wrong in the loss to Garrett. Eastside is no joke. Adams Central better be prepared. BLITZ SAYS ADAMS CENTRAL BY 6.
HERITAGE AT FAIRFIELD. Both squads beat up on inferior opponents last week – Heritage against Bellmont and Fairfield against Goshen. Now it gets real. The Falcons took it on the chin in a 26-point loss to the Patriots last year. Might new coach Cory Stoner have some tricks up his sleeve? BLITZ SAYS HERITAGE BY 9.
MADISON-GRANT AT SOUTHERN WELLS. The only Argylls that Blitz has ever heard of, at least in Indiana. Madison-Grant has rolled the Raiders each of the last three years. BLITZ SAYS MADISON-GRANT BY 36.
NEW CASTLE AT JAY COUNTY. Senior quarterback Sean Bailey accounted for three touchdowns last week, a fine performance to start the season. Prior to last year, the Patriots hadn’t started a season with two wins since 1996. Now, they are about to it two-straight campaigns. BLITZ SAYS JAY COUNTY BY 15.
WOODLAN AT CENTRAL NOBLE. Coach Brock Rohrbacher last won a high school game back in 2005 when he was coaching Leo. Nineteen years is a long time coming. BLITZ SAYS WOODLAN BY 13.
BLACKFORD AT FREMONT. The Eagles were shut out in Week 1 for the first time since 2018. Coach Trevor Thomas will get things right for this one. BLITZ SAYS FREMONT BY 21.
BRONSON (MI) AT PRAIRIE HEIGHTS. The Panthers may not pile up the wins once NECC play begins, but that offense sure is going to be fun to watch. Would be a big win to get this one. BLITZ SAYS PRAIRIE HEIGHTS BY 4.
LAKELAND AT CHURUBUSCO. If the Eagles can pack this one in and make it a grind for Lakeland, they can stay in this one. If ‘Busco allows Brayden Holbrook sling it all over the field, it won’t be close. BLITZ SAYS LAKELAND BY 18.
WEST NOBLE AT WAWASEE. Coach Monte Mawhorter’s squad has won 11 straight regular-season games dating back to 2022. Make it an even dozen with a showdown against Eastside looming in Week 3. BLITZ SAYS WEST NOBLE BY 14.
WARSAW AT WARREN CENTRAL. Kudos to Coach Bart Curtis for taking his squad down to Indy to take on a 6A power. It’s only going to make Warsaw better in the long run, which could be bad news for a team like North Side lurking in the same 5A sectional. BLITZ SAYS WARREN CENTRAL BY 15.
TAYLOR VS. BLACKHAWK CHRISTIAN. With Concordia on the road, Blackhawk Christian will have its first home game at Zollner Stadium, it’s home confines this year. There is no doubt the Braves play hard, they just need more bodies. BLITZ SAYS TAYLOR BY 24.
