This Friday is really what it’s all about.
Winning your rivalry game is nice. Capturing a sectional title feels good.
But when you talk goals for a season, every coach points toward holding aloft a sectional championship trophy in November.
Select area teams are aiming to do just that this week.
On to the picks.
Last week: 9-5 (.642)
Overall: 185-44 (.807)
WARSAW AT PENN. The run game was able to get it done last week for Warsaw, but the challenge is bigger against the Kingsmen, a team that has shut out four-straight foes. Think about it, Penn hasn’t given up a single point since September. That’s just silly. BLITZ SAYS PENN BY 11.
NORTH SIDE AT SNIDER. Did you forget North Side was still alive in the postseason? The Legends haven’t played for three weeks. Will they be rested or rusty? Will players be locked in mentally or checked out? North always plays Snider tough. This game will be closer than people think if North brings its best game. BLITZ SAYS SNIDER BY 13.
BISHOP DWENGER AT LEO. The last time the Lions won a sectional title was way back in 2011. The program has come close numerous times since, but has come up empty. This matchup favors the Lions, who play good run defense and have the athletes on the back end to keep Carter Minix (relatively) limited. As long as the Lions don’t beat themselves, the drought ends. Oh, and that opponent a dozen years ago in the sectional final? Dwenger. BLITZ SAYS LEO BY 8.
DELTA AT GARRETT. Every year there is a team playing in a sectional final that catches us off guard. This season, it’s the Railroaders, who seem a year ahead of schedule with this postseason run. Delta is good but nothing spectacular, and if Garrett plays as disciplined as it did last week it can win this game. In fact, let’s predict it. BLITZ SAYS GARRETT BY 3.
BISHOP LUERS AT MANCHESTER. The Knights continue to skate by, now 4-1 this season in games decided by four points or less after last week’s win. Manchester has struggled to score points against good teams, something that will be its undoing on Friday. BLITZ SAYS BISHOP LUERS BY 16.
EASTERN AT BLUFFTON. Eastern is playing for its first sectional championship in program history dating back to 1977. You can be assured that’s been talked about a lot this week in Greentown. The Comets have a QB that has thrown for 2,300 yards and a running back that is closing in on 2,000 yards. But Blitz isn’t too impressed with Eastern’s wins, with the best a five-point dub over 1A Sheridan. Bluffton gets it done. BLITZ SAYS BLUFFTON BY 7.
ADAMS CENTRAL AT MADISON-GRANT. How much time has Blitz given this week to thinking about this matchup? Well, let’s just say we are three weeks away from seeing the Flying Jets take on Lutheran for the third-straight season in the 1A title game. BLITZ SAYS ADAMS CENTRAL BY 39.
