Each season, the culmination of the Outside the Huddle Top 50 player countdown is the naming of our annual First Five, the highest preseason honor for OTH basketball coverage.
The First Five traces its lineage back to The News-Sentinel’s years of presenting “Fabulous Five” teams of the area’s best five players in both boys and girls basketball. This player is part of our sixth season of naming First Five players.
No. 3 – Kennedy Fuelling, Norwell
Fuelling has asserted herself as one of the best players in Norwell history, practically an impossible hill to climb when you look at the history of the program. With 1,052 points through her junior season, she is 7th all-time in Knights girls hoops points but if she scores as many points as a senior as she did a junior, she could be knocking on the door of the most points ever for Norwell girls. Her 40 points against Oak Hill last season was the most by a Norwell girl ever in a game and she ended up averaging 21.8 per game in 2022-23, the second best single season scoring average in Norwell girls history. Her 80 three pointers in a season and 11 against Concordia last year were both program records and she is the program’s all-time three point make leader with 180. Outside of her scoring prowess, Fuelling added 3.5 steals, three rebounds and 1.6 assists per game last season in becoming an Indiana Junior All-Star.
COACH’S QUOTE ON FUELLING:
“Kennedy is a tremendous leader and teammate. Her efficiency is off the charts, resulting from her hard work and unselfish play. Kennedy loves to compete in literally anything, and if there’s time/score involved, she’s all in. That makes it fun. She provides that balance our team needs through her quiet intensity and her unique sense of humor. Most importantly, Kennedy gives us that experience and senior leadership that we’re going to need in order to chase our team goals.” – Norwell coach Eric Thornton
