Week two of the 2023 Summit Summer League, ran by Flow Hoop, takes place this Wednesday, August 16.

After a strong week one of a lot of fun moments and a pretty balanced overall effort from the 29 players that participated, teams will be shook up for week two games. Want to check out games this week? They start at 6:30 at the 07 Complex (formerly Events at the Summit) on Rudisill with admission at $5.

What are some things to look forward to this week?

WHO STEPS UP SCORING?

Homestead’s Michael Raudenbush and Churubusco’s Joey Taylor tied for the most points week one (13.5 ppg), with each of them having one standout game in particular out of two played.

Mississinewa’s Preston McCann (13 ppg) finished just one total point back with a more balanced overall effort through his two games and the same could be said for Spire Academy’s Brady Lehman (12 ppg).

So who steps up scoring in week two? Here are three choices for me, all who had nice spurts in week one play:

Tucker Day (Canterbury) scored 7 of his team’s first 12 points last week and then nine total points the rest of the night. Can he keep his tank full with another week where he plays in back to back games, this time part of Team Durnell? With his size and quality post play, there are few that can defend him on Wednesday nights.

Rochester’s Owen Prater had a tremendous second game last week despite a loss. While most in the area probably aren’t familiar with Prater’s work, he is a hardworking glue guy who does just about everything. Prater can clean up around the rim and could find himself a bigger scoring threat this week for Team Rauch as he settles more into a comfort zone.

Fremont sharpshooter Conner Slee is coming off a tremendous summer, but didn’t quite find his stroke in week one. He will take the court for Team Rauch in week two looking to improve on his 50% shooting from last week. There were 13 guys who put up more shots than Slee last week, so getting him more touches could be important for Team Rauch especially having to play in back-to-back games.

JEVON LEWIS/JACKSON MCGEE DUO

Team Traylor will feature two of the top area players in week two with Wayne’s Jevon Lewis and Leo’s Jackson McGee. Lewis wasn’t able to play in week one so his Summit Summer League debut is already one of interest. McGee did play and although he had some shooting woes, he still averaged 7.5 points per game in his first two outings.

But there has to be a lot of interest in what these two can do together on the court as two of the more athletic and high profile players in the area last winter and again this coming winter. I am all about this pairing as I think it could be really exciting to see these two Class of 2024 leaders running together.

If those two are on, Team Traylor will be a force to be reckoned with, especially as it also contains Week One’s official Player of the Week Michael Raudenbush of Homestead.

BREAKOUT PLAYER

Two of any favorite breakout players of last week were Northrop’s Makhi Davis and Blackhawk Christian’s Jackson Hauser.

Davis showed off some severe athleticism and leaping ability. Parts of his game reminded me of what Wayne grad Monte Smith was able to do in this league last year and it immediately gave some more excitement of what Northrop could do under a new coach this winter. For Hauser, it was the most calm and confident I have seen him play and his 6 rebounds per game led the league in week one. What do they have in store for week two?

Also, who will be the breakout this week? I have my eyes on Lakeland sophomore Kyle Hartsough, who will play for Team Durnell in week two. Hartsough had a really good, yet under the radar week one. I am also intrigued by his Team Durnell teammate Jake Stoy, a freshman out of Prairie Heights. Stoy showed some promise in week one and it will be interesting to see if he takes a leap in week two.
