We have reached the top 5 in our countdown of Outside the Huddle’s Top 50 girls basketball players. This is No. 4 in our annual preseason crowning of the top 5 players in northeast Indiana that we call the ‘First Five;’ our highest individual preseason honor.
The ‘First Five’ was started in 2018, following in the 35-plus year tradition of naming the top five area basketball players, started by a now defunct prep sports department in Fort Wayne. It is our honor to pick up and carry on that tradition with the ‘First Five,’ including our fourth group of honorees coming this season at the top of our Top 50 countdown.
No. 4 Renna Schwieterman, Jay County
There is no up and coming about her anymore, Schwieterman is an all out star at this point. The clear cut best player in the ACAC this 2021-22 season, Schwieterman was one of the area’s top scorers at 18.2 points per game last season. That comes because there aren’t off days for the Patriot junior. She scored in double figures 20 of 23 games last season, scoring on all three levels while hitting 44 percent of all of her shots, including 32 percent from deep. She also shot 73 percent from the free throw line, hitting 91 shots there over the season. She is a highly skilled scorer who can succeed in her team’s offensive flow but also has a high skillset in a one on one setting, Schwieterman is good in isolation, she creates space into and out of drives and finds her range in jumpers using her sharp footwork.
There is a clear argument that Schwieterman is the best player in the ACAC and Jay County in a long time, perhaps ever, and she still has two seasons left. Right in the middle of her skills is the fact that Schwieterman has a massive combo of veteran smarts and youthful exuberance. Meaning, she can control the game with an educated mind but also has the openminded nature to freelance with what she does. Schwieterman, in addition to her big scoring, averaged six rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.9 steals per game in 2021-22.
