After a record 10,870 votes, Jay County senior Shelby Caldwell has been selected by the fans as the Outside the Huddle Preseason Player of the Year.
Caldwell led the Patriots with 15.1 points and eight rebounds per game as a junior. She also added 1.2 steals and 1.3 assists per game and came into the 2018-19 season as one of the top players in the Allen County Athletic Conference. Jay County is widely considered the favorite in the conference and picked to finish second in the ACAC by Outside the Huddle.
This season, Jay County will open play Friday, November 9 opposite Alexandria-Monroe.
In the final round of the fan vote, Caldwell amassed 60.14 percent of the vote (6,537 total votes) to top Columbia City senior Alaina Rongos.
To get to the finals, Caldwell beat out ACAC rival Grace Miller of Bluffton by just under 700 votes. In the opening round, Caldwell won the ‘Darby Maggard Region’ by beating South Side’s Olivia Smith, Central Noble’s Sydney Freeman and Bishop Luers’ Lydia Reimbold.
In total, Caldwell collected 9,331 total votes over the week long, three round fan vote.
