It was a fun night of Week 1 action at Luers Field on Friday night. The Bishop Luers Knights hosted the Adams Central Flying Jets in their first game since their Class 3A State Championship loss to Cascade.

It’s no secret that Luers graduated a ton of talented players from last year’s team, but that doesn’t mean they’ll shy away from scheduling a tough opponent early to challenge themselves. The Flying Jets return a lot of their team from last season that lost to Andrean in Semi-State last season. Ironically, that is Luers’ opponent in Week 2. AC was able to pick up a huge win in their first ever game against an SAC team with a 35-20 victory over Luers.

Although this was a two score deficit, the game was more competitive than the score presents.

The Flying Jets outgained the Knights with 358 total yards to 286 for Luers. AC’s running game couldn’t be stopped last night, compiling 277 rushing yards as a team. Luers was more active in the passing attack in this first matchup with junior quarterback Tommy Reichert completing 22 of 29 passes for 199 yards for a touchdown.

Offensively, the tone was set by AC when quarterback Jamison Roach led the Flying Jets down the field and capitalized it with a one yard touchdown run to take the early lead. He wound up scoring three total touchdowns with two rushing and one passing. The senior quarterback rushed for 95 yards on 15 carries for 2 touchdowns. He only threw six passes with two completions, including a 34-yard touchdown pass to Ashton Yergler.

Adams Central junior running back Barrett Collier led the way between for the Flying Jets with 10 carries for 112 rushing yards and two touchdowns.  He also had a 47-yard reception as well, so the junior was doing it all for his team on offense.

Luers junior running back TJ Epperson Jr. finished leading the way on offense for the Knights with 24 rushes for 110 yards for two touchdowns.  Although it was a losing effort, Luers’ offense is going to look a little different this season with Reichert throwing the ball a little more. He did turn the ball over a few times, but he clearly looks more comfortable and will settle in quickly. Wide receivers Rory Kelly and Cooper Smith had great highlight plays, as did Ben Lengerich.

Essentially, it was a back and forth game until the 4th quarter where AC pulled away forcing a couple of huge turnovers.

Adams Central head coach Michael Mosser was extremely proud of the way his team played against Luers.

“I loved our aggressive and tenacious spirit. From the first kick-off. All the way through the game they gave everything they had. We knew Game 1 wasn’t going to be perfect, but I loved how our kids picked their heads up and didn’t let the mistakes take us out of the game. I loved the execution our guys showed on offense, defense and special teams,” coach Mosser explained.

It’s Week 1, so it’s not going to be perfect football, so both teams have some cleaning up to do to prepare for  Week 2.

Adams Central prepares to host the 1-0 Eastside Blazers, who are coming off an impressive 45-27 victory over South Adams on Friday. As mentioned earlier, Luers will host Andrean, who lost to Merrillville 27-21 in Week 1.
