As always, we kick off our Friday mornings with five players to watch. Who is important in Week 11? Who’s a matchup problem? Did they shine in Week 10?
It is win or go home time in Indiana high school football yet again this week with Class 5A and Class 6A getting back involved after having last week off.
Here are the five guys you should keep an extra eye on tonight.
HENRY JORDAN, BISHOP DWENGER (vs. Columbia City)
The Saints have rarely relied heavily on their passing game, but Jordan’s poise under center has helped the Saints far more often than not, including in last week’s dominant win over Leo. He completed 8-of-11 passes for season bests 72.7 percent completion rate and 195 yards. Spreading out the offense kept Leo backpedaling and Jordan was calm in the process. He has thrown for 906 yards on the season and is completing eight passes per game.
CORNELIUS JACKSON, NORTHROP (vs. Snider)
In a season where Northrop’s offense has been the headline, Jackson has been stout for the defensive side of things. He takes that into Friday’s rematch with rival Snider. Jackson sits second on the Bruins with 78 total tackles and is by far the leader for the team in tackles for loss with 24.5 on the season. He has picked up 4.5 sacks and six hurries, has two forced fumbles and a blocked field goal. Jackson has done a bit of everything all season long and if he does so tonight, the Bruins could be playing for a Sectional title.
GRIFFIN MORGAN, BLUFFTON (vs. Adams Central)
Morgan has been a big leader and massive anchor for the Bluffton defense. His intensity and experience will be big if Bluffton wants to overcome mistakes made in the first game against the Flying Jets. Morgan leads the Tigers with 92 tackles on the season, including 61 solo. He is a ball hawk who likes to get involved and mix things up on every play where he can reach a ball carrier. Morgan has a sack, an interception and a fumble recovery to his name this season and had a forced fumble and 11 tackles in the last matchup with Adams Central.
HAWK HASSELMAN, ANGOLA (at West Noble)
Do everything Hawk Hasselman has been one of the brightest stories of the season. Angola will be looking to get back an earlier season loss to West Noble. Hasselman leads Angola in just about every way but his exploits on the field have only gotten better as the season progresses. He has a team best 51 solo tackles and second-best 69 total tackles to go with a sack and an interception. But Hasselman also thrives on the other side of the ball, with 205 carries for 986 yards and 14 touchdowns. In the last outing against West Noble, a 28-14 loss in September, Hasselman ran for 116 yards but had just five tackles.
XAVIER YATES, WEST NOBLE (vs. Angola)
Do not throw the ball at Xavier Yates. That was the statement made by the Chargers last week as the senior picked off Concordia three different times and is now at four interceptions on the season, matching a team high. He had eight tackles the last time that Angola and West Noble met, adding three catches in the win. On the season, Yates leads the Chargers with 80 tackles and sits at 271 yards receiving on a team second-best 23 receptions.
