Picks from the Pond for the Week of January 20

We have turned the corner and are coming down the home stretch of girls basketball season. The pairings show for the girls postseason takes place this coming Sunday, so there are plenty of good and important games to take in this week.

Lets get into it.

LAST WEEK: 12-4 (7-1 Girls, 5-3 boys)

THIS SEASON: 110-52

GIRLS GAMES

Warsaw at Homestead, Tuesday

The biggest game in Northeast Indiana all week, regardless of conference or gender or anything else. This is going to be an all out slugfest to really proclaim who is the best team in the OTH Coverage area and perhaps beyond. Both teams have high level scorers, including a lot of recent entrants to the 1,000 point club. Homestead only has two losses, but one of those comes to a like opponent and one that Warasw beat by 15.

The difference in this game likely isn’t scoring. They both have a lot of girls who can do it in bunches. Who can control the interior and the rebounding? Brooke Winchester is about as good as they come in big games with that, can Homestead counter? BOUNCE PICKS WARSAW

DeKalb at Bluffton, Tuesday

While the Tigers are the royalty of the ACAC, this is a good little non-conference game to give some more momentum to them for the postseason should they win. DeKalb is no slouch and Ashley Cox will have every argument as the best player on the floor. But right now, everyone is clicking for Bluffton. BOUNCE PICKS BLUFFTON

Fairfield at Central Noble, Tuesday

While we look a bit forward to Friday’s game for Central Noble, they have to play this one if they hope to play for a title on Saturday. Both of these teams befell the same fate in their last game: early surges not enough for Eastside. Both want bragging rights and, for Fairfield, a win here means they are still in the hunt for a share of the conference regular season. BOUNCE PICKS FAIRFIELD

Eastside at Central Noble, Friday

Can the Cougars force a three way tie atop the NECC? This game will come one week after Eastside held off some strong early play from the Cougars in the tournament. Did Central Noble figure out enough in a week to flip the script? They have to like having the home court here, but…BOUNCE PICKS EASTSIDE

Lakewood Park at Blackhawk Christian, Saturday

A nice precursor to the Sectional round, where these two could meet again. Both teams have again picked up double digit wins this season. This is a tale of who has more around their big scoring weapons. BOUNCE PICKS LAKEWOOD PARK

Snider at Northridge, Saturday

These are the kind of games that are going to make this still young Snider team tougher for the postseason and years to come. That said, Northridge has just been a juggernaut and despite losing to powers Warsaw and Penn lately, they have won 7 of their last 9 and are scoring just shy of 59 points per game this season. BOUNCE PICKS NORTHRIDGE

Whitko at Northfield, Saturday

As long as the Wildcats win on Thursday at Maconaquah, this game will be the last they need to capture an outright TRC title. It will be Northfield’s third game of the week and my guess is Whitko is very much ready to wrap this up. BOUNCE PICKS WHITKO

Warsaw at Concord, Saturday

Another conference wrap up game here and it shouldn’t be much of one. Warsaw needs to win on the road to claim an outright NLC title. BOUNCE PICKS WARSAW

BOYS GAMES

Homestead at Columbia City, Tuesday

The Eagles are coming off a tough loss in conference last week, but this is a chance to bounce back immediately at home. The Eagles have solid depth, but Homestead’s is starting to look like it could be dangerously deep – especially with how Mack Welker has been playing offensively. BOUNCE PICKS HOMESTEAD

Westview at Leo, Tuesday

The NECC tournament champs turn around quick with a fun one that is new to the schedule. The Warriors shot the ball really well last week, so it will be fun to see how Leo defends it and if they can use any kind of size advantage. Another fun wrinkle is that Leo coach Derek Hinen is well versed in Westview from his time leading Fairfield in the NECC. BOUNCE PICKS WESTVIEW

Fairfield at Westview, Friday

We thought we would see this one last week before an upset kept Fairfield from the NECC Tournament semi finals. It is going to be a good test for the Falcons and we will see how much momentum Westview has in conference. BOUNCE PICKS WESTVIEW

Manchester at Adams Central, Saturday

There may not be a more anticipated scoring matchup in Northeast Indiana the remainder of the season than Manchester’s Gavin Betten and Adams Central’s Trace Mallers. The question remains about AC if they can get high level scoring from more than two guys. BOUNCE PICKS MANCHESTER

Warsaw at North Side, Saturday

A fun little trip into the SAC for Warsaw, this could be a go to game Saturday afternoon at 5 pm for those just looking for a good contest. Warsaw has been pretty dominant and that dominance is helping them get deeper. North Side has been a surprise as a team who can contend with the emergence of Sebastian Moore. This wasn’t a must see game at the start of the season, but kind of is now. BOUNCE PICKS WARSAW

Adams Central at Bluffton, Saturday

The loser of this one is out of the running in the ACAC where three teams are tied with one loss behind current conference unbeaten Heritage. In a different world, this very well could have been the ACAC tournament title game last Saturday. Instead, we get it here as an eliminator game. I would be lying if I said I wasn’t second guessing this; expect a good one. BOUNCE PICKS BLUFFTON

Woodlan at Heritage, Saturday

Talk about big ACAC games, here we have a rematch a week later from the ACAC finals. It is always interesting to see how teams rebound with a second chance so close to the first meeting. How about some ACAC chaos? BOUNCE PICKS WOODLAN

Norwell at New Haven, Saturday

The race at the top of the NE8 is and has been tight. This one could really help establish New Haven as a favorite because of how well Norwell started things out. If last week is any indication, nobody may have the defensive pressure and skill to counter all of New Haven’s scoring prowess. BOUNCE PIKCS NEW HAVEN
