Every other week, Outside the Huddle will break down the top 10 teams on the girls side.
#1 – HOMESTEAD (9-0, 3-0 SAC)
The Spartans picked up two more lopsided wins last week and don’t look like they are stopping anytime soon. They have arguably the most depth and best depth in the area and are currently winning by nearly 25 points per game on average.
WHY NOT HIGHER?
Doesn’t get higher than that.
BEST WIN/WORST LOSS: 62-20 win over Northridge; no losses
#2 – WARSAW (9-0, 1-0 NLC)
Warsaw is having no problems in putting teams away, winning by over 27 points per game with their closest contest outside of a 73-71 overtime win versus Valpo being 18 points against Crown Point.
WHY NOT HIGHER?
Started two, stay two until Homestead loses.
BEST WIN/WORST LOSS: 73-71 overtime win vs Valparaiso; no losses
#3 – NORWELL (7-3, 1-0 NE8)
Angola gave Norwell one of the better pushes they’ve gotten without actually beating the Knights but still Norwell is now on a four game winning streak with the conference showdown with Columbia City nearing this week. Right now, there is just no reason to believe that anyone in the area not ranked above Norwell can beat Norwell.
WHY NOT HIGHER?
Still because of losses to the two teams ahead of them.
BEST WIN/WORST LOSS: 62-57 win over Northrop; 50-74 loss to Warsaw
#4 – EASTSIDE (8-0, 3-0 NECC)
Eastside continues to show up and do business. You have to beat who you play and the Blazers have done that in droves, though the quality of the wins takes a hit not because of anything Eastside is doing but because teams like Woodlan and Luers are just not as good as they have been. But Eastside still rolls, that’s what they do.
WHY NOT HIGHER?
Three teams ahead of them all have much better wins.
BEST WIN/WORST LOSS: 54-41 win over Angola; no losses
#5 – BELLMONT (8-1, 1-0 NE8)
Bellmont bounced back well from their bad Homestead loss by beating two decent teams who each could have taken advantage of a down Bellmont. Instead, the Braves roll and are holding opponents to 36 points per game, scoring 23.6 more themselves.
WHY NOT HIGHER?
The loss to Homestead is a big reason. Very lopsided.
BEST WIN/WORST LOSS: 53-38 win over DeKalb; 32-67 loss to Homestead.
#6 – COLUMBIA CITY (7-2, 1-0 NE8)
The Eagles have been a pleasant surprise as they have reloaded because this team is not just Addison Baxter. They have been great defensively and are coming off a 40 point when where they held Leo to just 25 points. They hold two losses but those opponents are a combined 15-5.
WHY NOT HIGHER?
They need a more signature win. This is the week to take a shot at that.
BEST WIN/WORST LOSS: 54-42 win over Snider; 58-67 loss to Brownsburg
#7 – NORTHROP (5-2, 2-1 SAC)
Winners of four straight, the Bruins have found a groove after an upset loss on November 15. Khala Williams-Thomas has every claim of being the best offensive and defensive player in the SAC right now. More big games are to come, but right now Northrop is doing what they are supposed to do.
WHY NOT HIGHER?
Need a signature win themselves with four loss Carroll being their best so far.
BEST WIN/WORST LOSS: 63-54 win over Carroll; 57-62 loss to Concordia
#8 – BLUFFTON (9-1, 2-0 ACAC)
Bluffton has been a really fun team to watch because they have a whole cavalcade of girls who can score and who can rebound. They are at the tops of the ACAC right now which is fun because that has been a conference that has been one sided for a while now.
WHY NOT HIGHER?
Toughest opponent they have played, they lost to.
BEST WIN/WORST LOSS: 66-45 win over Huntington North; 47-57 loss to East Noble
#9 – WABASH (7-1, 1-0 TRC)
Wabash has been able to flex their scoring depth repeatedly, including four straight games in the 60s. That comes from a lot of high energy offensive talent that was added to by the transfer of Brooklynn Buzzard.
WHY NOT HIGHER?
No team they have beaten has a winning record with the best being 4-4 Marion.
BEST WIN/WORST LOSS: 68-61 win over Marion; 47-48 loss to Culver Academy.
#10 – SNIDER (6-4, 2-0 SAC)
The Panthers have played really strong in their wins and despite four total losses, they are still a team we are looking at to contend in the SAC. Their four losses are against really good programs, two of which are higher than them in this week’s power poll.
WHY NOT HIGHER?
Four losses has them here, even though their six wins have been nice.
BEST WIN/WORST LOSS: 40-33 win over Lake Central; 38-59 loss to Fishers
