OTH FIRST ELEVEN 2021: No. 8 Brauntae Johnson

North Side’s Brauntae Johnson

Is Brauntae Johnson a basketball player playing football? Or a football player playing basketball.

Maybe the better question is, ‘Who cares?’

Johnson burst onto the Friday night scene in 2020 in a big way, quickly showing out and proving to many that as a ninth grader he was already one of the most exciting athletes and top talents not just in the area, but one of the best in the Class of 2024 in the country. Per 247Sports, Johnson is ranked as the top player in the state in his class and the No. 34 player overall in the country.

Johnson is a matchup nightmare. His speed and size (6-foot-3, 180 pounds) make him difficult to defend in the open field, while his open-field moves are silky smooth. His return game is exceptional, particularly once he accelerates and runs away from defenders. He caught 36 balls for 596 yards and seven TDs as a freshman.

On defense, expect to see Johnson in a lot more action as his skill set is too good to have on the sideline for long.

What is truly scary is the fact that Johnson is full of potential and will no doubt gets better. He is beating opponents based on his God-given ability, but as he learns schemes and the idiosyncrasies of the game, he will be truly dominant.

COACH’S QUOTE ON BRAUNTAE JOHNSON

“Tae in my opinion is the most dynamic athlete in the state. He can play multiple positions at a very high level. He does things that you can’t coach. I 100 percent believe he has PRO-tential.” – North Side coach Ben Johnson
