According to multiple sources, there will be no SAC Holiday Tournament in the year 2020.
Things had been trending that way recently according to those Outside the Huddle spoke to last Thursday about the recent rumors. The official cancellation for 2020 happened today although there is no word on how this will effect future seasons.
Fort Wayne Community Schools tweeted that the cancellation was due to COVID-19 risk, yet Outside the Huddle sources indicate that Parkview Sports Medicine, the annual sponsor of the event, would not be a sponsor this year due to their organization’s policy prohibiting large gatherings. Parkview was the primary financial supplier for the tournament, paying for around 60 percent of the total cost of the event yearly. The tournament has been taking place yearly at Wayne High School after stints at the Memorial Coliseum, Northrop and IPFW.
The tournament has seen lower crowds the last couple of seasons, but remains one of the most looked forward to events around the holidays in recent years. When the ACAC decided to move their January conference tournament from the Coliseum, the SAC Tournament became the only one played around the holidays in Fort Wayne.
Huntington North has also been hosting a tournament in recent years at the same time as the SAC Holiday Tournament. Columbia City and Carroll have also been sites for tournaments in late December in the past decade.
The Carroll boys and the Homestead girls are the defending tournament champions. The single game girls scoring record was also broken in 2019 by South Side’s Jaci Jones.
Coaches in the SAC will now be searching for alternate opponents or tournaments to take the place of the event.
