DeKalb (weeks 2-4) and Angola (weeks 2-3) cancel varsity football games

DeKalb and Angola due battle on August 21 during week one of the 2020 football season. Sources now say the Barons won’t play in weeks two or three.

Multiple sources have confirmed to Outside the Huddle that DeKalb and Angola will be sidelined for the next two to three weeks due to coronavirus quarantine.

“Because of unfortunate circumstances and with the following of guidelines set by the DeKalb County Health Department, Friday nights home Varsity Football game vs Garrett has been cancelled,” posted DeKalb athletic director Christopher Rhodes Wednesday on Twitter.

“We are going to hold off on Week 3 as well,” Rhodes confirmed.

Later on Wednesday afternoon, DeKalb athletics announced the varsity team will also not play East Noble on September 11, giving the Barons three straight off weeks.

Angola’s athletics Twitter also confirmed that it will be sidelined for the next two weeks. The Hornets were scheduled to play Leo this week, with an open date in Week 3.

“Out of abundance of caution and the recommendation of the Steuben County Health Department, our varsity football team who played in the game last Friday night against DeKalb will be quarantined for 14 days,” the tweet said.

According to The Auburn Star, a player on DeKalb has tested positive for the coronavirus. DeKalb High School confirmed this is a release on their social media Wednesday afternoon saying the player participated in the August 21 game and an August 22 practice. According to the release, all players who traveled to the game on August 21 have been considered “close contact” and are to be quarantined for 14 days starting August 26 with those students not returning to class until September 8.

The Barons were scheduled to face Garrett this Friday and New Haven in Week 3. Garrett athletic director Chris DePew confirmed to OTH that the Railroaders will not play DeKalb this week and Northeast Indiana GameNight says that the Railroaders would not play any team this Friday after there seemed to be some consideration they would play Leo, who was scheduled to be DeKalb’s Week two opponent.

The Barons began the season at Angola in Week 1, falling 55-18 to the Hornets.

Angola’s next scheduled game is now September 11 versus West Noble.
