Outside the Huddle is continuing its series called CORONAVIRUS VOICES, giving area coaches, players and others a platform to share their stories, thoughts and advice during the pandemic.
We continue the series with Coach Byron Pickens of Wayne.
Show More Love and Stay Ready
Let’s just call a spade a spade: this pandemic is scary and that is okay! None of us have ever been through anything like this. It can be tough to deal with but isn’t that what we teach? As leaders, we teach our teams to smile in the face of adversity, overcome any obstacle and learn the lesson in a loss.
With all this idle time, one thing I can say is that Covid-19 has helped me show more love. I’ve always been one to thank anyone that is doing a service for me, but I have gained a greater appreciation for those who are risking their lives to help me and others. Recently, I was on a FaceTime call with my entire team from college. Some of us haven’t spoken to each other in years, but before anyone got off of the call they said, “I love you.” I am also trying to make weekly communications with my players, both past and present.
We don’t know when this will be over. It could be in 14 days or it could be in 14 months. However, I have urged all of my players to stay ready. Staying ready means continue to study, continue to be selfless, continue to train and most importantly continue to live and have a positive outlook on life.
We are all in this together.
I love you all. Please stay ready.
