BOUNCE’S BREAKDOWN: Girls hoops 2A Sectional 35

BounceInset_2

Throughout the weekend, your favorite amphibian is going to be checking in on the sectionals that will most interest our area teams and readers. The favorite team listed, well that is my pick to walk out of Saturday, February 8 with a trophy.

We go to class 2A at Fairfield where the best three teams are on one side of the bracket and games kick off on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Note: Records are as of the morning of Saturday, February 1

FAVORITE

BREMEN (16-7)

Erin Coffel is the best player in this Sectional and it is a big part of why Bremen is the favorite right now. The Lion senior averaged 17 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.7 steals per game and shoots 45 percent from the field. As a team, Bremen has won 8 of their last 10 games with Ellia Foster providing a boost to their offense.

Bremen is only giving up 34.2 points per game, so their defense will be crucial in matchups with longer teams in Fairfield and Prairie Heights.

CONTENDERS

FAIRFIELD (14-9)

A regular season ending loss to West Noble took some steam off the second half of the season where they won seven of their last nine games and made it to the finals of the NECC Tournament where they were able to battle with Angola for much of the contest. Fairfield’s push to contend for a title will hinge a lot on a freshman. Brea Garber can make a heck of a difference with her length and high I.Q.

THE REST

PRAIRIE HEIGHTS (9-13)

The winner of Heights and Fairfield has the best and maybe only chance to knock off Bremen. Everyone who knows about the Panthers know that they can go often how Alexis German goes and that may very well still be the case. To me, the defensive intensity is important, that starts with sophomore Alayna Boots helping up top and the rim protection of Kennedy Kugler, who is almost averaging a double double.

WESTVIEW (4-17)

A rebuilding season has seen the Warriors take their lumps but the bright points are still there. Gloria Miller can grab a double double at will and you certainly can’t just assume that you will steamroll by them. While it isn’t automatic, it is highly likely they will be playing for a Sectional title on Saturday.

LAVILLE (1-20)

The Lancers shoot just 27 percent from the field and score 25.1 points per game. This has been a struggle of a season as they have lost 20 in a row after starting the season with a win.
