Bounce’s Picks for the Week of Jan. 27

Welcome to the final week of girls basketball season for the regular season. It means that not only do we just have a smattering of girls games on the slate, but the boys season is in major gear past the midway point and conference races are going to keep heating up.

The Bounce Traveling Trophy on the girls side stayed with Homestead again this week with wins over Warsaw and North Side. Blackhawk Christian retained the boys trophy with a win on Saturday over Lakewood Park.

I will again be picking five girls games and five boys games today, but you won’t see the boys game between Snider and Carroll, a rematch of the SAC Tournament finals, which will be previewed as the Outside the Huddle Game of the Weekend later this week.

Last week: 6-5

Season total: 94-33

GIRLS

Northrop at Columbia City, Tuesday

Two teams looking for positive momentum heading into Sectional play, Northrop has a real chance to win their Sectional and Columbia City represents a challenge similar to what they will get in the postseason. This is no easy task, Columbia City has size challenge TiAuna White and Destiny Jackson up front and there may be some emotion for a Tuesday game as this will be the final time a Columbia City girls basketball game will take place in the current high school. Bounce picks Northrop

Huntington North at South Side, Tuesday

These are always interesting. Is this a statement, a dress rehearsal or a blow by game where you don’t show your hand? Either way, these two teams will square off Tuesday and then again seven days later in Sectional play. So the question is, do you want to show your entire hand in this one, a fairly meaningless game? The Vikings have slowed everyone else down, this is a chance to see if that works with the fast paced Archers. Bounce picks South Side

Woodlan at Concordia, Tuesday

Two more teams in the same Sectional, but opposite sides of their bracket here. You have to look at this is a great opportunity for Woodlan to get shots up at the Sectional host site and for Concordia, beating the ACAC champs would mean a lot this week. This game could be won or lost on the interior and how Woodlan will or won’t be able to work around the Craig sisters. Bounce picks Woodlan

Bellmont at Angola, Wednesday

The Squaws are going to spend the early part of the week working on their offense after being held to 16 points last week against Huntington North and knowing Angola is full of stoppers. This could be a knock down, drag out fight with two teams who play hard and aggressive. Bounce picks Angola

Garrett at Lakeland, Friday

A little last NECC bragging rights here and not enough credit has been given to Lakeland, who has kind of snuck into second place while many were talking about Garrett/Central Noble/Eastside. Bailey Hartsough is a walking bucket and the Lakers have a chance to gain real traction here. What can Garrett do to get the ball down to Morgan Ostrowski here? Doing so would be a game changer. Bounce picks Garrett

BOYS

Churubusco at Snider, Tuesday

This is one that Bounce has had circled on his calendar since the fall when I knew it was going to happen. Big question: is Noah Wolfe back for the Eagles? He spreads out the floor so much and considering that this is going to be a running game, that would help. I am really looking forward to these two teams getting out on the break, metaphorically punching back and forth. Do not miss this game. Bounce picks Snider

Bishop Luers at Norwell, Tuesday

The two, dare I say, hottest teams in the area right now. Luers is a great defensive stopping team that plays with a lot of energy. They are a better version of what Norwell saw last weekend in a win over New Haven. What makes Norwell more dangerous? We now know they can get behind and lack momentum and still push through. Another night at The Castle, the hardest place to visit this season. Bounce picks Norwell

Central Noble at Churubusco, Friday

A rematch of a hard played NECC semi final, but switching locations this time. Can Churubusco rally together a raucous crowd to get behind them in a game with MAJOR implications in the NECC? The Eagles need to be stoppers on the perimeter because this game is going to flow as Connor Essegian and Sawyer Yoder flow. Don’t expect this game to be anything less than an emotional one. Bounce picks Churubusco

New Haven at Columbia City, Saturday

Kind of out of nowhere, Columbia City has become another top team in the NE8, sharing the conference lead. The Eagles need this to keep pace and New Haven needs this to still have a chance down the stretch to share the conference title. This is going to be a big game of will with the Bulldogs having to prove they are closers. Who can step up next to Columbia City’s Mitchell Wilson? They need a big inside presence. Bounce picks New Haven

Norwell at East Noble, Saturday

Norwell is winning big in the NE8 but they aren’t out of the woods yet. East Noble has been exciting lately and winning games a lot of people didn’t think they would. The Knights can change this conference more on Saturday at if there is anywhere near as hard to play at as Norwell, it is at East Noble’s Pit. Gritty guard play is the highlight of this one with matchups like Eli Riley versus Brooks Miller and Connor Torson versus Hayden Jones. What a great matchup that we probably didn’t expect to be great a month ago. Bounce picks Norwell
