Bounce’s Picks for the Week of Jan. 13

Back for another week of game picks and riding on a wave of success. Who does Bounce think will pick up important W’s this time around?

Both of the totally invisible Bounce Traveling Trophies have stayed safe with the Homestead girls continuing their reign by beating South Side on Friday and the Carroll boys going 2-0 with wins over Bishop Dwenger and East Noble.

I will again be picking five girls games and five boys games today, but you won’t see a few things. There will be no picks from either the ACAC or NECC Tournaments taking place this week.

Last week: 9-2

Season total: 82-24

GIRLS

Lakewood Park at Northrop, Tuesday

The Panthers enter this one with Chloe Jolloff clicking on all cylinders, including last week’s triple double performances. The trouble for her and the Panthers here is their lack of height and overall size compared to the Bruins and their big number duo of TiAuna White and Destiny Jackson. Northrop is tough at the rim and that isn’t where Lakewood Park lives. Bounce picks Northrop

Northfield at Homestead, Tuesday

Northfield has now won five games in a row for the second time this season, but Homestead is by far their stiffest test. The Spartans have developed into a team that is so strong defensively that they keep teams out of the paint and off the free throw line. The Spartans are playing like the best team in the state. Bounce picks Homestead

Bishop Luers at Carroll, Friday

By far the best game on the SAC girls slate this week, Carroll is still a team with questions regarding their lineup. Also, who is going to be able to control the paint in this one? Carroll has been very successful in this realm lately, but the Knights are on another level at the rim. Kennedy Glenn is back in this lineup next to Lydia Reimbold and Dori Javins had a nine rebound game last Friday too. Bounce picks Bishop Luers

Columbia City at Huntington North, Saturday

Here we go. Last week we got NE8 chaos, this week we are guaranteed clarity. Columbia City is either going to come into this week reeling or focused. What they do now will make a big impact as Huntington North is having their best season in some time. After their loss to Bellmont, I feel like Columbia City may be even with the Vikings. Who has the best experience and momentum? NE8 clarity starts here…Bounce picks Columbia City

Bellmont at Norwell, Saturday

…and NE8 clarity extends here. For many years now, this has been the go-to NE8 contest on the girls side. It decides a champion very often including last year’s classic showdown in Decatur. The last time these two were on the court at Norwell, the Squaws took a Sectional game off the Knights. Expect this game to be just as much of a classic. I, for one, won’t be overlooking Bellmont anymore. That said, nothing is guaranteed in this one; possibly the best game in all of the area this week. Bounce picks Norwell

BOYS

Homestead at Blackhawk Christian, Tuesday

If you aren’t at one of the conference tournaments on Tuesday night, you should be watching two of the area’s best players and best teams. A year ago, Homestead had the answer key when solving the BC puzzle. Not many other people could claim that, even in small parts of games. Homestead has a big week and a big conference game to focus on, but can they apply enough attention here? The biggest question though, can the Spartans replicate the defense they applied to Caleb Furst last season? So far in his junior season, Furst has been practically unbendable. So how do you stop that? Bounce picks Blackhawk Christian

Bishop Luers at Carroll, Friday

Carroll is clearly in the drivers seat and have now won five straight games. The Chargers are getting great efforts from Ryan Preston and Jalen Jackson and are running like one of those typically hard to beat, well oiled Marty Beasley machines. Luers is coming off a big three win week and is going to have to be able to out will and out think the Chargers in this one, something that feasible as they’ve gotten so much better and has an entire week to prepare. Bounce picks Carroll

Snider at Homestead, Friday

The rematch of the SAC Tournament’s biggest game. There was a lot of emotion in that game and Snider has been riding a wave of success since (minus the SAC final). Beating Homestead twice in a season doesn’t happen much (the last time was North Side in 2017), so Snider has to be at their best, especially at Homestead. And lets not forget the look of letdown on the faces of Homestead’s players after the December loss. They are ready for this one. Strap in on Friday night, the place will be packed and the game will be tight. Bounce picks Homestead

Lakewood Park at Canterbury, Friday

This could be a really fun one with two teams who have strong and underrated athleticism leading the way. Canterbury has had some illnesses run through their team and haven’t been at 100 percent, yet Will Shank has shined in the process. This one could hinge on Chris Diwis (Canterbury) and Caedmon Bontrager (LP) on the inside. Bounce picks Canterbury

Leo at New Haven, Friday

Game two of three games that I’ve always thought would decide the NE8. For Leo to have a say in the end, they need this win and they need to convert from long range better. New Haven lost a game of back and forth with Snider a week ago, so they don’t want to trade shots here either. Bounce picks New Haven
