HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Blitz’s Picks, Week 8

This is the time of year where fan bases, kids and even some coaches are either looking ahead to the playoffs with excitement or relief.

Some want this season to carry on as long as it possibly can.

Others just want to end the misery.

Such is sports. Actually, such are a lot of things in life.

But you didn’t come here for life lessons from Blitz. You came here for some Week 8 picks. Thankfully, Blitz can tout last week’s 18-2 record, although he continues to have zero clue on how to pick Garrett.

Onto the picks.

Last week: 18-2 (.900)

Overall: 123-34 (.783)

CARROLL AT NORTHROP. Who had this one circled in the preseason as a potential SAC title decider? Carroll is the leading offense and defense in the conference terms of points scored/allowed. Can the Bruins continue its magical season and take a large step forward towards the Victory Bell? This one comes down to each team’s defensive lines. Who can put pressure on the opposing quarterback and force them into mistakes? Advantage: Chargers. BLITZ SAYS CARROLL BY 6.

NORTH SIDE AT HOMESTEAD. Has anyone figured out Homestead? Blitz sure hasn’t. One week, it knocks off Snider 38-0, the next it loses by 49 to rival Carroll. The inconsistency makes the Spartans unpredictable. They could win this game by double digits or lose it by double digits and neither would surprise Blitz. Interesting stat to consider: North Side’s five wins have come against teams that are a combined 5-30. BLITZ SAYS HOMESTEAD BY 3.

SNIDER AT BISHOP DWENGER. The Panthers are in the midst of a three-game losing streak, the longest skid for the program since 1989. Are you wondering when Snider last lost four games in a row? Blitz was too. The answer? 1967. BLITZ SAYS BISHOP DWENGER BY 15.

SOUTH SIDE AT CONCORDIA. This one is flying under the radar, but has the potential to be a really entertaining game at Zollner. The Archers have played Bishop Luers and North Side tough in the past month, while the Cadets are feeling good after last week’s dub. Can Eli Trent make the plays at QB with his arm and legs to earn Concordia its first SAC winning streak since 2020? Or does Chris Mhoon make mincemeat out of the Cadets’ defense that’s allowing over 42 points per game? BLITZ SAYS SOUTH SIDE BY 11.

WAYNE AT BISHOP LUERS. The last time the Knights lost to the Generals, the year was 2018 and guys like Craig Young, Keshaun Fields and Devonair Kelsaw were making mincemeat of SAC defenses on a regular basis. This young Wayne team lacks that firepower. Luers also lacks in its traditional playmakers, but a veteran line makes all the difference. BLITZ SAYS BISHOP LUERS BY 23.

COLUMBIA CITY AT LEO. Every time Blitz writes about Leo, he ends up just mentioning Nathan Foster. That’s just not fair. So how about this: junior linebacker Paul Woods leads the Lions in tackles (42) and tackles for loss (eight) while also having an interception. Woods and his defensive mates should be more than enough to limit the Eagles enough for to avenge last year’s wild loss at Columbia City a year ago. BLITZ SAYS LEO BY 16.

DEKALB AT BELLMONT. The last win for Bellmont? A 42-34 victory over DeKalb on Oct. 8, 2021. You can bet that has been mentioned a time or two or 20 this week by the DeKalb staff. A fourth-straight win would give the Barons their longest winning streak since 2019. BLITZ SAYS DEKALB BY 34.

HUNTINGTON NORTH AT NORWELL. The Knights have been shut out three times this year, including the last two weeks against East Noble and DeKalb. Norwell finds a way to score against the Vikings, but it won’t be enough. BLITZ SAYS HUNTINGTON NORTH BY 21.

NEW HAVEN AT EAST NOBLE. How about some love for the “other” Phillips not named Austin? Alex Phillips leads the Knights with 36 receptions to go with 373 yards and five touchdowns. A true breakout season by the junior, who had just six catches last year, shows the depth outside of the well-spoken about Rylee Biddle, Austin Phillips and Alex Scott. BLITZ SAYS EAST NOBLE BY 40.

ADAMS CENTRAL AT BLUFFTON. Blitz really wants this game to deliver. A battle of undefeateds. ACAC supremacy on the line, not to mention Adams Central’s 29-game league winning streak and 15 straight over the Tigers. The Flying Jets did a phenomenal job shutting down QB Tytus Lehman of South Adams a few weeks ago. They will look to do the same thing with Axton Beste of Bluffton on Friday. As Blitz has said repeatedly, AC rises to the occasion when a league foe is hyped to challenge them. Until someone knocks ’em off…BLITZ SAYS ADAMS CENTRAL BY 9.

HERITAGE AT SOUTHERN WELLS. Injuries have made it tough for Heritage at the QB spot, with four different guys attempting at least 14 passes this year. Despite that, Coach Jeremy Hullinger’s team sits at 4-3 with a pair of winnable road games to end the regular season. First up are the Raiders. BLITZ SAYS HERITAGE BY 22.

JAY COUNTY AT LAPEL. The Patriots head to Lapel, which is undefeated, ranked No. 3 in Class 2A and is led by quarterback Devin Craig and his 23 total touchdowns. In other words, not a good matchup. BLITZ SAYS LAPEL BY 44.

SOUTH ADAMS AT WOODLAN. It was nice to see the Warriors get a win last week in what has been a challenging Year 2 for Coach Brock Rohrbacher. Speaking of challenging, Woodlan ends the regular season with South Adams and Adams Central. Woof. BLITZ SAYS SOUTH ADAMS BY 28.

CENTRAL NOBLE AT EASTSIDE. The Blazers have won 17 straight in this series dating back to 2009. Majority of those games haven’t been particularly close, either. Make it 18 in a row. BLITZ SAYS EASTSIDE BY 32.

FAIRFIELD AT LAKELAND. The Lakeland offense has been very puzzling this year. With Brayden Holbrook and Keyan Arroyo leading the way, we expected more. Blitz thought the road win at Angola was a breakout moment, but a seven-point effort at West Noble last week shot that idea down. Fairfield is susceptible to the pass, so the Lakers should find the end zone regularly on Friday. But Blitz has been wrong about this team before this year…BLITZ SAYS LAKELAND BY 13.

FREMONT AT PRAIRIE HEIGHTS. After last year’s five-win campaign, Prairie Heights remains winless in 2025, which has been tough to see. Fremont presents an opportunity, but Heights’ defense has struggled to slow down opposing offenses. That’s not a good sign facing at Eagles team averaging 33 points per contest. BLITZ SAYS FREMONT BY 21.

GARRETT AT ANGOLA. Two teams that have flummoxed (look it up) Blitz all season long. Pick ’em to win, they lose. Pick ’em to lose, they win. Final regular-season home game for Angola’s Hawk Hasselman. He goes out with a bang. BLITZ SAYS ANGOLA BY 2.

WEST NOBLE AT CHURUBUSCO. The two division champs in the NECC collide in Turtle Town. Churubusco’s offense has been sensational in recent weeks, and the defense continues to slow down offenses just enough to pile up the dubs. If West Noble can make some plays in the vertical pass game, it can knock off the Eagles for the third-straight time. BLITZ SAYS WEST NOBLE BY 3.

BLACKHAWK CHRISTIAN AT MONROE CENTRAL. After routing Irvington Prep last week, a program that canceled the remainder of its season a few days ago, Blackhawk Christian hits the road. Monroe Central is having a down year, but has enough to take care of business against the Braves. BLITZ SAYS MONROE CENTRAL BY 20.

NORTHWOOD AT WARSAW. These final two regular-season games are pivotal for the 4-3 Tigers. Both are at home, both are winnable and the momentum gained would be big entering a sectional where it could be a factor. Expect a lot of running yards in this one. BLITZ SAYS WARSAW BY 1.
