Each season, the culmination of the Outside the Huddle Top 50 player countdown is the naming of our annual First Five, the highest preseason honor for OTH basketball coverage.
The First Five traces its lineage back to The News-Sentinel’s years of presenting “Fabulous Five” teams of the area’s best five players in both boys and girls basketball. This player is part of our seventh season of naming First Five players.

No. 4 – Dereon Truesdale, Bishop Luers
Truesdale, one half of Bishop Luers’ electrifying twin duo, is a dynamic lead guard whose energy and skill set make him a game-changer on both ends of the court. Last season, he showcased his versatility by averaging an impressive 17.5 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 2.8 steals per game. Offensively, Truesdale is a relentless attacker who can score in a variety of ways, whether by driving to the rim, pulling up for mid-range jumpers, or creating opportunities beyond the arc. Defensively, his high-energy play and tenacious on-ball pressure disrupt opponents’ rhythm, making it nearly impossible for them to initiate plays comfortably.
COACH’S QUOTE ON TRUESDALE
“Dereon can score the ball extremely well from all 3 levels. He is nearly unstoppable in the open floor and wreaks havoc in passing lanes, defensively. Dereon’s potential is sky-high as he continues to grow physically and mentally within the game of basketball. We look for Dereon to have a great senior season, improving his overall game, after breaking out as a junior.” – Bishop Luers coach Seth Coffing
