PREP FOOTBALL: Blitz’s Regional Championship Picks

Blitz took some gambles last week in his picks and, well, it didn’t work out too well.

But hey, what is Blitz’s loss is the area’s gain, as we have a large amount of matchups this week that could see local teams advance to semistate.

Blitz also was hit with an accusation that he just takes someone else’s picks off the interwebs and claims them as his own.

Please.

Blitz is 100 percent original. He doesn’t need to beg, borrow or steal from anyone. He wins and loses (especially loses) on his own.

Now to the picks.

Last week: 2-6 (.250)

Overall: 193-44 (.814)

CARROLL AT CROWN POINT. This is when Class 6A gets real. Carroll has had a sensational year owning the SAC and capturing a sectional title, but Crown Point is an altogether different beast. The Bulldogs aren’t necessary flashy – they run the ball effectively and have a sensational defense. Crown Point is undefeated and put all 11 of its opponents so far into running clock territory in the second half. Not saying that happens to Carroll, but this is a tough ask for a good, but not great, Chargers team. BLITZ SAYS CROWN POINT BY 13.

LAFAYETTE JEFF AT WARSAW. Congrats to the Tigers, who are hosting their first-ever regional contest in program history. They also get a favorable matchup. Yes, the Bronchos are undefeated, but they have beaten exactly one team with a winning record – Lafayette Harrison, which finished 6-4. Lafayette Jeff owned the NCC, but the league is a shell of its former self. Keyen Crowder is a prolific passer for Jeff, 2,676 passing yards and 37 touchdowns, but Concord is a better team than Jeff is, and Warsaw won that showdown last week. BLITZ SAYS WARSAW BY 7.

HUNTINGTON NORTH AT EAST NOBLE. The only matchup between area teams this week, and a rematch of East Noble’s 28-16 win in Week 3. There is not enough attention being placed on the Knights’ defense, a unit that has allowed just 14 points combined over the course of five games, including shutouts of Leo and Bishop Dwenger the last two weeks. The question for Blitz is, can the Huntington North defense, which has also played well of late, slow down East Noble enough to keep this one within striking distance of the Vikings? BLITZ SAYS EAST NOBLE BY 9.

KNOX AT GARRETT. Knox brings a prolific running attack to Garrett on Friday, led by record-breaking running back Myles McLaughlin. The Railroaders have shut down high-profile backs and running games this season, namely Seth Pruitt and West Noble. But this will be their biggest test by far. Garrett played an imperfect game last week, something it can’t afford at this level of the playoffs. The Redskins are good enough to win this one, but only if the Railroaders underperform. BLITZ SAYS GARRETT BY 6.

BISHOP LUERS AT MACONAQUAH. It is the Indian tribe tour for the Knights, who played Mississinewa last week and are in Miami County (named after another tribe) to take on Maconaquah this Friday. All due respect to the Braves, they have beat up on teams in a weak Three Rivers Conference all year. Yes, beating West Lafayette on the road last Friday was impressive, but that wasn’t a vintage WL squad. This may not be a vintage Bishop Luers team either, but it is battle tested and talented on the back end of the defense, which will be in direct combat with Maconaquah quarterback Aiden Robinson (2,872 passing yards, 39 TDs). Advantage: Knights. BLITZ SAYS BISHOP LUERS BY 15.

EASTERN AT ADAMS CENTRAL. Blitz doesn’t really like comparing common opponents, particularly from different years, but this example is telling. Eastern headed to Bluffton last year for a sectional final and lost 41-6. That very same Bluffton team was shut out by AC last year, and the Tigers lost twice to the Flying Jets this season. In other words, Adams Central is on a completely different level than Eastern is. The final score will prove that. BLITZ SAYS ADAMS CENTRAL BY 26.

NORTH MIAMI AT SOUTH ADAMS. After slaying the likes of Tri and Madison-Grant on the road in each of the past two weeks, a matchup with North Miami at home feels like a bit of a breather for the Starfires. The Warriors are a run-heavy squad, very similar to South Adams’ last two foes, while Blitz sees favorable matchups for the Starfire offense to take advantage of. In other words, after doubting Coach Grant Moser’s abilities the last two weeks, Blitz is back on the bandwagon of the ‘bearded one.’ BLITZ SAYS SOUTH ADAMS BY 11.
