Kirk Comer set to take over Bishop Dwenger girls basketball

Jay County coaching legend Kirk Comer is headed back to the sidelines.

Multiple sources have confirmed to Outside the Huddle that Comer will become the next head girls basketball coach at Bishop Dwenger.

Comer had two stints at Jay County with the last coming between 2015-2023. Although Jay County did not win a postseason title in that time, the program dominated the ACAC and never won less than 14 games, doing 23-2 in Comer’s final season.

Comer started coaching at Daleville before moving on to Union City where he won three straight Sectionals and also a Regional title in 2001. Following that, he spent five years at Jay County during his first stretch with the school, winning a Sectional title in 2006. He moved onto Winchester for two regional title seasons.

In 2011, Comer took a move to the boys side as he led Union City boys for one season. In 2014, Comer went back to coaching girls basketball and he spent one season at Monroe Central with a Sectional crown before moving back to Jay County.

Throughout his coaching career, Comer has amassed 406 career wins, seven sectional championships and three Regional titles. During his 20 seasons coaching girls basketball, Comer has never had a losing record and went .500 just one time, a 13-13 season at Monroe Central where he still won a Sectional crown. His only losing season as a varsity head coach came during his Union City boys coaching venture where he went 7-13 in his one season.

Bishop Dwenger went 10-15 last season under coach Steve Wiktorowski, who spent five seasons leading the Saints. Bishop Dwenger’s last winning season game in 2018-2019 when they went 11-10 under Cleveland Inge. The program has not won a Sectional since 1999 but captured nine such titles with five of them coming in the 1990’s.
