At a school board meeting on Tuesday night, South Adams finalized new coaches for both of their basketball teams for the 2023-2024 season.
Kyle Roe will take over the boys basketball program, coming from Adams Central where he has been the girls basketball coach for the past two seasons.
Roe is a 1997 Adams Central graduate and was a junior varsity coach at the school before taking over the girls program in July 2022. He went 13-33 in the next two seasons leading the Flying Jet girls teams.
Roe will take over for Garrett Krieg, who led the Starfire boys for the past three season, amassing a 12-55 record during that time. Roe will become the fifth South Adams boys basketball coach over the past 10 seasons with Andy Brown being the only coach to stay in the position for more than three seasons during that time starting in 2011-2012 and running for six seasons. The Starfires last had a winning season in 2020-2021 when they were 15-9.
South Adams finished 0-6 and in seventh place in the ACAC last season, going 3-19 overall. Their last postseason title in boys basketball came in 1993 when they won Sectional and Regional titles.
The girls side will be taken over by former South Adams coach Brett Freeman.
Freeman became a teacher at South Adams in 2012 and on November 28, 2012 he became the winningest coach in program history.
South Adams finished 3-3 in the ACAC last season and 7-16 overall, placing fourth in the conference in both of those records. All-time great area coach Wayne Kreiger spent the last three seasons leading South Adams after taking over from Freeman. Freeman had coached South Adams for the nine seasons previous to that after being Eastside’s girls basketball coach from 2005-2013.
During his time at South Adams, Freeman led the Starfires to a Sectional title in 2017 with a 16-10 overall record, beating Eastside for the title before falling to Central Noble in the Regional round. Freeman had a .500 or better record in six of those nine seasons, highlighted by a 19-4 mark in the 2015-2016 season, where the lost an overtime battle to Eastside in the Sectional round.
