2023-2024 Outside the Huddle Boys Basketball All-Area Team

For the sixth consecutive season, Outside the Huddle is proud to announce our 17 player All-Area basketball team for the boys as their seasons has concluded.

These are the 17 top players, as seen by OTH, during the 2023-2024 season. They are listed alphabetically by grade.

JAXSON FUGATE, NORTH SIDE, SENIOR

Fugate more than delivered in his senior season as he led North Side in scoring on their way to a second straight Sectional title. While being named IBCA Senior All-State Honorable Mention, Fugate scored 16.4 points per game, among the top averages in the SAC, and added 5.9 points, 1.3 steals and 1.7 blocks per contest. Fugate will continue his playing career at Indiana Tech.

COLE HAYWORTH, CONCORDIA, SENIOR

Concordia added a Sectional title to their trophy case and Hayworth was a massive part of that as he concluded his high school career. Hayworth averaged 19.4 points, combining a heavy handed inside game with an outside touch. He also averaged 4.3 points and 1.5 steals per game and was named IBCA Senior All-State Honorable Mention. He finished his career with 1,001 points. Hayworth will continue his playing career at Grace College.

NATE KEIL, LAKELAND, SENIOR

As one of just four players in Northeast Indiana to average over 20 points per game, Keil anchored Lakeland on their run to the NECC regular season title. The senior posted 20.1 points per contest over 24 appearances, adding 6.1 rebounds and 3.7 assists per contest. He was named IBCA Senior All-State Honorable Mention.

KYLER KRULL, WHITKO, SENIOR

Krull helped navigate the Wildcats through a tough TRC with a 19-5 overall record. Krull was named IBCA Senior All-State Small School and was among the top 3 area players based on IBCA All-State honors. During his senior season, Krull averaged 18.7 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game. Krull reached 1,000 career points for his career in January.

DEVON LEWIS, CANTERBURY, SENIOR

As the anchor in Canterbury’s run to a Class 1A state title, Lewis was a constant for the Cavaliers out of the backcourt. Averaging 15.2 points per game, Lewis led Canterbury in scoring as well as assists per game (2.9) and steals per game (2). Lewis was named IBCA Senior All-State Honorable Mention as the Cavs cashed in their first ever state title in boys basketball. Lewis reached 1,000 points scoring for his high school career in December.

JEVON LEWIS, WAYNE, SENIOR

The speedster shooter for Wayne had another stellar season as Wayne reached the semi state round for the second season in a row. OTH’s preseason number one player was named IBCA Senior All-State Supreme 15 as one of the top 15 seniors across Indiana. He averaged 19.4 points per 27 games, adding 3.8 rebound, 2.3 steals and an area best 7.6 assists per game. Lewis surpassed 1,000 career points during a November game against Leo; he will continue his playing career at Bishop State Community College.

MICAH MCCLURE, ADAMS CENTRAL, SENIOR

Part of Adams Central’s senior duo that led the Flying Jets to unprecedented heights during their time with the program, McClure averaged 11 points per game to go with an area best three steals and area second best six assists per game. McClure helped lead Adams Central to an undefeated conference season as ACAC regular season and tournament champions.

JACKSON MCGEE, LEO, SENIOR

As the leading scorer scorer in the Northeast 8 Conference, McGee was also seventh in the area in points per game at 19.1 over 25 contests. McGee was named IBCA Senior All-State Honorable Mention as he added a career best 7.6 rebounds, which was also in the top 10 in Northeast Indiana during the 2023-24 season. He surpassed 1,000 career points on senior night against Bishop Dwenger. McGee will continue his playing career at Grand Valley State.

JACK SCHEUMANN, BELLMONT, SENIOR

As Bellmont captured a share of the Northeast 8 title and were one of the breakout teams of the 2023-24 season, Scheumann shined. He scored an area season best 42 points in a game against Bishop Luers the night after surpassing 1,000 career points. On the season, the senior averaged 18.4 points, 3.9 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 2.3 steals per game.

ISAAC SCHULTZ, ADAMS CENTRAL, SENIOR

As half of Adams Central’s tremendous senior duo, Schultz picked up where his junior season ended and joined the 1,000 point scoring club in February. He led Adams Central to an unbeaten ACAC season with conference regular season and tournament titles along the way while averaging an area best 24 points per game. The ACAC Tournament MVP also averaged 10 rebounds as one of a handful of players averaging a double double for the season. Schultz will continue his playing career at Olivet Nazarene.

EUGENE YOUNG, NORTH SIDE, SENIOR

A do everything player for the North Side Legends, Young helped in bringing a second straight Sectional title to the program. He averaged 14.1 points, a team best 8.9 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game over 27 appearances. At season’s end, Young was named IBCA Senior All-State Honorable Mention. Young will continue his playing career at Anderson University.

CHASE BARNES, WAYNE, JUNIOR

Barnes took off during his junior season, battling back from a midseason injury to help lead Wayne to a second straight semi state appearance. During the season, the Division I prospect averred 14.3 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.5 steals per contest. Barnes was named IBCA Underclass All-State Large School and was also named an Indiana Junior All-Star.

GAVIN BETTEN, MANCHESTER, JUNIOR

One of the more dominant players in Northeast Indiana, Betten anchored Manchester as they won a share of the Three Rivers Conference title. He averaged an area second best 20.8 points per game and was one of a handful of players to average a double double in the area, adding 10.7 rebounds per game. Betten also averaged 3.9 assists, 3 blocks and 2.1 steals per game. Betten was named IBCA Underclass All-State Small School.

KELLEN PICKETT, BLACKHAWK CHRISTIAN, JUNIOR

The area’s leader in rebounds per game with 11.9, the Division I prospect also averaged 20.5 points per game as the third leading scorer in the area. Pickett added 4.5 assists and an area best 3.8 blocks per game as Blackhawk Christian made it back to the semi state round. Pickett was named IBCA Underclass All-State Small School and was also named an Indiana Junior All-Star. During March 16’s game against Wabash, Pickett joined the 1,000 point club.

DEREON TRUESDALE, BISHOP LUERS, JUNIOR

One half of the Bishop Luers junior twin duo, this Truesdale shined as the Knights made waves in the SAC and Class 2A, though fell short of any team titles. Dereon Truesdale averaged a team best 17.5 points per game to go with 5.7 rebounds and 2.8 steals per contest. Truesdale was named IBCA Underclass All-State Small School.

DREYLN TRUESDALE, BISHOP LUERS, JUNIOR

Drelyn Truesdale joined his brother, this Truesdale was a true force on the defensive end for the Bishop Luers Knights, averaging 2.9 steals per game. He also was used as a pace setter for the SAC frontrunner with 4.1 assists per game to go with 15.6 points and 4.8 rebounds. Truesdale was named IBCA Underclass All-State Honorable Mention.

TREY YODER, WOODLAN, JUNIOR

While Woodlan was not able to cash in on any team championships, Yoder joined an exclusive list of area players to average a double double for the season. Yoder led Woodlan at 16.6 point and 10.1 rebounds per game, while adding 2.8 assists and 1.4 blocks per contest over 20 games. Yoder was named IBCA Underclass All-State Honorable Mention.
